Panama Canal Expansion Begins Filling of New Locks

02:08
The Panama Canal has taken another important step forward toward the completion of the Expansion Program as it begins to fill the lower chamber of its new Atlantic locks. During an initial phase of filling, which will take approximately five days, the Canal will gradually raise the water level within the lower chambers of the new locks, pumping in approximately 50 thousand cubic meters of water per hour from Gatun Lake. This will allow for the testing of the first gates. The same process will then fill the rest of the Atlantic sections of locks, reaching a water level of 27 meters above sea level. Tests and inspections are expected to take approximately four months. Learn more about this project at expansion.pancanal.com

How Does the Panama Canal Work?

01:03
The Panama Canal is approximately 80 kilometers long between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Canal uses a system of locks that function as water lifts, raising the ships from sea level (the Pacific or the Atlantic) to the level of Gatun Lake (26 meters above sea level); ships then sail the channel through the Continental Divide.

Panama Canal Expansion Complete Transit & Inaugural Ceremony (Short Version)

02:17
For more information: http://www.canalampliado.com. The Expansion Program is the largest enhancement project since the Canal’s opening in 1914. Considered and analyzed for a decade with more than 100 studies, the Expansion provides the world’s shippers, retailers, manufacturers and consumers with greater shipping options, better maritime service, enhanced logistics and supply-chain reliability. The Expansion included the construction of a new set of locks on the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the waterway and the excavation of more than 150 million cubic meters of material, creating a third lane of traffic and doubling the cargo capacity of the waterway. While the Expanded locks are 70 feet wider and 18 feet deeper than those in the original Canal, they use less water due to water-savings basins that recycle 60 percent of the water used per transit. In line with its commitment to customer service, the Panama Canal will continue to provide the world with value for another century and beyond.

The Expanded Canal Adds Benefits to Green Route

00:52
Since its opening in 1914, the Panama Canal has been a Green Route, helping in the reduction of time and distances for the maritime world. More than a million ships have benefited from the Panama Canal route, by reducing costs and changing world trade patterns. By using this route, these ships have not only reduce navigation time, but also the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. With the Panama Canal Expansion, the strategic global trade advantages as well as the benefits for the environment will multiply. The Panama Canal not only generates savings in time and cost to its users, it is the best option to preserve the environment, preventing further CO2 emissions which are causing global warming. For over 100 years, the Panama Canal Green Route has provided a reduction of approximately 650 million tons of CO2. With the expanded Canal, it is estimated that the Panama Canal Green Route will reduce more than 160 million tons of CO2 in the first 10 years of operation.
