He clutches his smartphone as the three make awkward conversation. The two women ask when his birthday is, and marvel that he’s a Leo. Kalanick retorts, “I make sure every year is a hard year.” He continues, “That’s kind of how I roll. I make sure every year is a hard year. And it keeps getting worse. That pleasant conversation between Kalanick and his friends in the back of an Uber Black? It devolved into a heated argument over Uber’s fares between the CEO and his driver, Fawzi Kamel, who then turned over a dashboard recording of the conversation to Bloomberg. Kamel, 37, has been driving for Uber since 2011 and wants to draw attention to the plight of Uber drivers. In the West you would assume the importance to be the same, but there is a significant distinction. In China connections with the right people help you to get things done, to survive and to succeed. Whereas in the West content is predominant, in China the way people interact with each other strongly influences the working environment. 'Face' and long-term effects are taken into consideration. Valérie Hoeks (1982) studied Sinology at the Leiden University and has been active in China for over a decade as a traveller, a student and later as an entrepreneur. As soon as she set foot on Chinese soil she knew she would come back many times. In 2010 Valérie co-founded China Inroads in collaboration with with her Dutch and Chinese business partner. 7 Parenting Tips to Deal With a Naughty Child
Every child is different, and you need to find a unique approach to raising your beloved baby, but there are some golden rules that will help you deal with even the most disobedient ones. Parenting experts explain how you can get your kids to behave better and to do what they’re told in all kinds of situations. When your kid starts misbehaving and refuses to cross the road, either switch roles with them or give your kid a choice. Either they hold your hand or go in the stroller. In most cases, your kid will readily take your hand. What should you do if your child has misbehaved but isn't ready to face the music? Please keep in mind that emotional abuse is never the right way out. So instead of making your child stand in the corner for a long time, open up a dialogue and figure out together how their mistake can be fixed. In case your little isn’t excited about the morning meal, try “breakfast on a stick”. You just need a few wooden skewers and pieces of waffle, different fruit chunks, and berries. Kids have fun stabbing their food with the sticks, and this turns any old boring fork-and-knife breakfast into a cool game. It must be hard for kids to switch from a fun activity to a much less entertaining one. Turn it into a game called Follow the Leader. You can either lead yourself or let the child do it. In this case, they won't even notice the transition from play time to some routine activity. Long hours on the road are ten times more boring for kids than they are for adults. You can find tons of other fun car games on the Internet. They’ll definitely entertain your kids on a road trip while giving you some peace of mind as well. Let the child play the role of the parent, and you'll see that they'll immediately get into the game and do what you want them to. -In case your child won’t accept punishment, calmly explain why they’re guilty and why they're going to be punished. Let them have the right to choose even when they make mistakes: for example offer them to either have to pay a fine from their piggy bank or do the dishes for the next week. -When your child refuses to eat their meal, don't get frustrated, simply try to find compromises. Offer them dessert as a prize for cleaning up their plate. -If your kid refuses to have breakfast, keep them company. To make it more fun, suggest they count how many spoonfuls of cereal are left. You can also make it a bedtime tradition to ask your kid what they want for breakfast the next day to avoid unpleasant surprises. -If kids refuse to get dressed, try a challenging game: tell them you wanna see if they can put their clothes on blindfolded. You can also play the matching game: you choose a color, and the children need to find clothes that match. -To make your kid stop playing and go to bed, try playing the game “Follow the Leader”. You’ll be the leader, and your little one must follow. Make it fun: walk in a weird way, make sudden jumps and hops that your child must repeat. -To avoid misbehavior in the car, try playing the Fake Dreams game. Tell everybody in the car to close their eyes and make up a dream that they “see”. -Address the issue of fairness when you want to encourage children to behave well. You simply need to explain to your kids why it would be better for them to play along, and they’ll understand this. When a situation makes sense for children, they’re ready to cooperate. El Nino and climate change have brought severe drought, and years of corrupt and incompetent leadership have ruined the economy--a two punch combination that has this tropical nation of 30 million people reeling. The drought means water is only arriving in the capital, Caracas, once a week. And when it does come, it’s brown and makes people sick. With no rain, the water level is critically low at the Guri hydroelectric dam that normally provides about 60 percent of the nation’s power demand, but without enough water to run it at full capacity, the government is shutting off electricity for hours every day. This energy crisis is coupled with an economy in shambles. Inflation is above 700 percent, that’s the highest rate in the world. All this is due to the poor decision making of an extremist government that’s been led by Hugo Chavez and his successor Nicolas Maduro. They’ve been gradually destroying business with a tsunami of regulations, price controls and government takeovers, which has eliminated the private production of many goods and services. So people have bags full of cash, but nothing to buy. Grocery store shelves are bare, and hunger is spreading rapidly. The most tragic part of this story is that Venezuela is sitting on the world’s largest reserves of black gold, so with all that oil it should be on the opposite end of the spectrum--it should be one of the healthier economies in the world. To understand why it’s not, I think two points are worth highlighting: 1) Venezuela has a tumultuous modern history, with constant - and often violent - struggles for power, so Venezuelans have had to put up with a lot of turmoil and don’t expect much stability from their government, and 2) the country is still suffering from the aftermath of the rule of Hugo Chavez, a charismatic firebrand who rose through the military and led two failed coup attempts before becoming President. After himself surviving a coup attempt, Chavez ruled Venezuela during the Bush years, and constantly portrayed himself as a socialist counterweight to Bush’s imperialism. Chavez: “Yesterday the Devil came here.” He also took advantage of record high oil prices during the 2000’s to spend lavishly on his people while running irresponsibly-high budget deficits year after year. But the oil money kept flowing in, so the damage Chavez was doing wasn’t obvious until after his passing from cancer, in 2013, when his hand-picked successor - Nicolas Maduro - took power in a fraudulent election and continued Chavez’s policies. In 2014, Venezuela suddenly found itself ranked fifth in Latin America in GDP per capita--falling from first place when Chavez took over in ’99. And as oil prices plunged, so did revenues, but the government couldn’t scale back because its spending on social programs and employment was propping up the entire economy. Fed up - especially over moves like jailing the leader of the opposition - Venezuelans showed their displeasure at the ballot box and earlier this year, Maduro’s United Socialist Party lost control of the legislature in a landslide, but he packed the courts with judges who so far have defeated lawmakers’ efforts to remove him from office. Maduro’s also following the dictator playbook by declaring a state of emergency and revving up the military that will be his last line of defense if large numbers of Venezuelans take to the streets in revolt. You know, everybody has issues. Their issues will come up against you. They will push your buttons. You’re going to take punches. Period. It’s Kali Yuga. Everybody has issues. I think it helps to understand that everybody sees everybody else’s issues. On some level, you sense them. It’s not like we are all oblivious to so-and-so’s issues and they are pushing your buttons because you see their issues and nobody else does. Everybody sees everybody else’s issues. So the question is, how can you be great? You can be great by navigating those waters wisely. You take a punch, but you don’t get all caught up in it. You don’t let their issues trigger your issues, and then the war goes on. What does that look like? We’re human, so we have our emotions. So our buttons do get pushed. This is important: It’s not about trying to attain a level where your buttons don’t get pushed. Your buttons will get pushed. You will get triggered by other people’s issues. They will ruffle your feathers. That’s not the question. The question is, what do you do about it? How do you deal with it? Do you sit there and hold a grudge? Do you put a person in a box where you judge them and get everyone around you to collude with you and agree with you that this person is bad because…? And now we all can judge that person? Or do you just say, “Do you know what? Everybody has issues. That’s their issues and isn’t it nice that we can all identify so well that person’s issues.” Just move forward. I think we get into trouble when we think we’re the only one who sees this person’s issues, or maybe our little group is the only one that sees this person’s issues. These other people don’t see it. Know that on some level, to some degree, everybody sees everybody else’s issues. In the ashram days, there was a man who was sneaking into the Ayurvedic clinic at night to do treatments on himself. That’s not really fair because it was in the ashram and everybody was paying for the clinic and this guy was sneaking in and getting free treatments. When it came up, I really respected one guy’s response: He shook his head and said, “Well, he needs it.” I thought it was a good attitude. Why get caught up in it? Yeah, we’ll remedy it, we’ll deal with it. But don’t get all stirred up with it. I wrote a blog just this morning on flatlining. It’s like flatlining. If your buttons get pushed, you don’t just buckle, you don’t get all tangled up, you don’t flatline. Instead, you say, “Oh, they pushed my buttons,” and here comes a wave through my physiology, but I’m not going to let it spin my kite. I’m going to keep the tail on the kite, keep my stability, and yeah they pushed my buttons, but I’m still fine. Once you flatline, you’re a mess. If you find people who will flatline with you, that’s called collusion. It doesn’t get you anywhere. Here me when I say if you can do what I just said, if you can work with that and function in that way, you’re great. You’re a great person. It’s really that ridiculously simple. Don’t turn this around and judge yourself. Keep in mind, yes your buttons will get pushed. That’s fine. But what do you do with it? How do you handle it? How do you deal with it? That little thing there about how you deal with it is what will make you great. You will gain the respect of people. As I’ve said in the past, where your power comes from is the respect other people have for you. If you can do what I just said, people will respect you tremendously. You will become a powerful person, a powerful force in nature. It’s just that simple. A history of the Kashmir conflict | The Economist
In 1947 Britain prepared to end nearly a century of rule over the Indian subcontinent and its 390 million people. Hindus were concentrated in central and southern India, Muslims in Bengal in the northwest. In the chaos that followed partition, 15 million people fled across the new borders and 500,000 died in rioting. Four border regions saw the worst of it: Sindh, Bengal, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. Among India's 565 princely states only Jammu and Kashmir had a Hindu Maharajah ruling over a majority Muslim population. India claimed the Maharaja decided to join India. Pakistan disputed this. In October Pashtuns from Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province invaded Kashmir with the support of Pakistan's government. In October of 1947 the Maharaja left Srinagar. Indian troops were airlifted in but were ill-prepared for the cold and altitude. Pakistan responded with its own campaign and India approached the United Nations to broker a ceasefire which went into effect on January 1st 1949, establishing a line of control but no final border. In 1962 China attacked India in the Aksai Chin region of Kashmir easily defeating India's poorly equipped Himalayan troops. China retains control of the Aksai Chin today. Three years later encouraged by China's success Pakistan sent troops across the line of control dressed as Kashmiri locals - the fighting proved brief and inconclusive. On September 22nd both sides agreed to a un-backed ceasefire. Another brief war broke out over East Pakistan in 1971 - this one conclusive. East Pakistan seceded. Ten million refugees streamed into West Bengal and, with India's help, Bangladesh was born. In 1999 after both India and Pakistan had successfully tested nuclear weapons, full-scale war was barely avoided when Pakistan tried to seize the cargill region of indian-controlled Kashmir. At one time an average of one Pakistani soldier every four days and one Indian soldier every other day died at the Siachen glacier and the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008 were reportedly planned by senior members of lashkar-e-taiba, which Pakistan created to fight Indian domination of Kashmir and which India accuses of terrorist atrocities all over India. The conflict simmers in 2007, 777 people were killed in violence in Jammu and Kashmir bringing the two decade total above 47,000 by India's official count. according to some Kashmiris the total is twice that number. This Man Visited A Cemetery To Photograph Historic Graves. But Then He Made A Heartrending Discovery
The Good Cemeterian: https://www.facebook.com/pg/TheGoodCemeterian Andrew Lumish, from Tampa, Florida, is passionate about history and photography. But when he headed out to a local cemetery to take some photographs of old gravestones back in 2015, Lumish was shocked by what he discovered. What he witnessed in the cemetery had a huge effect on him, one so great that it would pretty much alter his life. Lumish runs his own cleaning business. It’s a busy job and means he only gets one day off a week. But he was so moved by what he found in the cemetery that for the last few years he’s been dedicating his one free day a week to making a difference. You see, although Lumish didn’t know any of the people buried in the cemetery, he was dismayed by the state of their tombstones. “Something bothered me,” Lumish told the Tampa Bay Times back in 2015. “Their final resting places were total disasters.” It seems the passage of time and the influence of the elements had damaged the headstones; indeed, some were so encrusted in grime that it was impossible to even read the inscriptions on them. Richard Gale and Gary NullProgressive Radio Network, September 18, 2018 It is time to take a serious, critical look at Wikipedia and its mission. Is it everything it purports to be as an objective encyclopedic source of knowledge or just another anti-democratic social media dynasty resorting to the censorship and suppression of unorthodox medical science, social criticism and political dissent contrary to its founder’s rigid ideological beliefs?  With over 5.6 million articles totaling 45 million pages, Wikipedia offers an enormous amount of information, and the majority of it is recognizably accurate. Over 30 million people are registered as editors for the site, but the number of active editors fluctuates around 130,000 and is decreasing steadily. On the other hand, entries on contemporary issues that elicit controversy and debate, often when commercial interests and public policies are at stake, have become opportunities for editors to post propaganda, gossip, launch character assassinations, add flagrant misinformation and untruths, and delete truthful data to spin and strengthen specific ideologies, beliefs, and conflicts of interest contrary to the encyclopedia’s rules. Today all major media, Left and Right, as well as the larger Silicon Valley firms that support it, employ news and commentary that serve as weapons for mass public ignorance. It is common for people’s reputations to be destroyed. Conservatives and liberals alike claim the other disseminates fake news and each attempts to demonize and censor the other regardless of the accuracy or relevancy of what is being reported. There are still many investigative journalists with deep integrity and a commitment to expose the truth, such as the late Robert Parry from Consortium News, Chris Hedges and Robert Scheer at Truthdig, Bruce Dixon and Glen Ford at the Black Agenda Report, Henry Giroux and William River Pitts at Truthout and others who have since had their sites blocked by Google and Facebook. But these are only several of hundreds of other online outlets and news blogs that have been banned and left without any recourse to address grievances. There is no arbitration. And this trend is increasing at lightning speed. For over a decade we have been reviewing hundreds of articles on a daily basis about medicine and health, climate change and the environment, geopolitics and culture. We apply a strong litmus test to determine accuracy and trustworthiness. Consistently we discover that the public is being misled by special interest groups on both sides of the political spectrum. The Left and Right control large segments of the media through advertising or direct ownership. Billions of dollars are spent annually on lobbyists, consultants, think tanks and foundations, public relations firms, and astroturf groups. And behind these entities are even more powerful organizations such as federal intelligence and health agencies, the Business Roundtable, the Atlantic Council, the mega-internet firms, and of course the pharmaceutical industry. Control of the media and the internet, to silence important voices, denies the public an opportunity to gaze upon the larger picture. For the powerful, it is preferable for the public to see only a small sliver of reality in order to keep citizens in check. For example, in the past, it was not the federal CDC, FDA or the National Cancer Institute that initiated efforts to warm the public about the risks of smoking or to avoid exposure to asbestos. Instead it was from people of conscience, such as whistleblowers, insiders and independent scientists and journalists, who alerted Americans and spoke in opposition to the corporations determined to keep the health risks hidden away in the dark. It was an insider Daniel Ellsberg who brought the Pentagon Papers to public attention, and without Edward Snowden we would not know the full extent of the government’s surveillance state. Mainstream media of its own volition would have remained silent about it. After many hundreds of hours of investigative research into Wikipedia, a shocking story is being uncovered. Throughout the Wikimedia Foundation’s organizational structure, and reaching into the editorial hierarchy of its open-sourced encyclopedia, are multiple layers of deception, dangerous ideologies, extreme biases, and conflicts of interests. The site has built a wall harboring a cesspool of unprofessional and undefinable editors to obfuscate the truth and slander people and entire professions. In short, a kind of deep state is now acting with authority to control Wikipedia articles. Nigeria may sit atop one of the largest oil reserves in the world, but the majority of the Nigerian people have seen little benefit from the multibillion-dollar industry. The government and global energy companies have been exploiting the resource for years, bringing poverty, pollution, and violence to the Niger Delta. And now the local militias fighting for oil control have made conditions even worse. Caught in the conflict are Nigerian citizens involved in the illegal oil market simply for survival. Oil theft is rampant, and the booming black market has transnational oil and gas consultants concerned about the effects on global oil markets. The government isn't too happy about it either. “All the oil that is sold around here, the government calls illegally refined products,” local oil businessman Don Wizaro told VICE News. And when the Nigerian military raids illegal oil operations, they slash containers, releasing oil into waterways, contaminating what the main source of fishing, agriculture, and drinking water. As the government continues its assault on illegal refineries and barges carrying stolen oil, local militias are retaliating. And one of the most notorious militias is the Niger Delta Avengers. They attack pipelines and infrastructure, significantly affecting both the environment and the economy. Taha Yasseri: Armies in the lab: Studying conflicts and opinion clashes in Wikipedia
This talk was recorded at Europe's first Computational Social Science conference at the University of Warwick in June 2014, hosted by the Data Science Lab at Warwick Business School (http://www.datasciencelab.co.uk). ABSTRACT | Wikipedia is not only the largest online encyclopaedia ever, but also a notable example of internet-based collaborative value production. However, there are many unanswered questions about the mechanisms behind the process of article formation in Wikipedia, such as emergence and resolution of editorial wars. In this work, we try to locate, quantify, and understand the features of editorial wars in details. To this end, we focus on the network of editors of certain articles, who are connected by anti-collaboration links, i.e., reverting edits. Then we introduce a measure of controversy based on the parameters of the revert network, which ranks the articles according to the “amount of conflict” in them. We observe different scenarios of edit wars with various characteristics and ways to approach to consensus, which we successfully model in the agent-based-modelling framework. Finally, we try to reveal leader/follower relationships between editors and its effects on editorial wars as well as triangular closures between triples of editors. BIOGRAPHY | Taha Yasseri (PhD in Physics) is the Big Data Research Officer at the University of Oxford’s Internet Institute (OII). Prior to the OII, he spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, working on the socio-physical aspects of the community of Wikipedia editors, focusing on conflict and editorial wars, along with Big Data analysis to understand human dynamics, language complexity, and popularity spread. He has interests in analysis of Big Data to understand human dynamics, government-society interactions, mass collaboration, and opinion dynamics within the framework of computational Social science. He has a PhD degree from university of Göttingen, Germany in complex systems physics.

If you want to be successful and rich, but something always seems to be standing in your way, you might be making one of the most common mistakes that prevent us from getting more money. Transcript: Suzanne Petryshyn: "Hi and welcome to this week's video tutorial. I'm Suzanne Petryshyn and I am owner and CEO of Peak Conflict Solutions. This week, in both LinkedIn Pulse as well as on our website at peakconflictsolutions.com, I wrote two articles about the same topic and theme about the causes of workplace conflict. Now, oftentimes, when people are experiencing conflict in the workplace, everybody's really hypersensitive and reactive to everything that they perceive and everything that is going on for them every day when they come into work and sometimes have to endure all day long. When we look at the causes of workplace conflict, it's important to recognize that theory states that underlying all conflicts in the workplace, there's only three main causes, and those three causes are conflict over resources, conflict over psychological needs, and conflict over values. So if you sit and reflect for a moment, and think about a recent conflict that you've had or a difficult conversation that you've experienced in the workplace, was it about resources, was it about psychological needs, or was it about values? So examples of resource conflict in the workplace include scarce limited resources for a department, so right down to the money. Again, conflict over resources are always the first point of contention in any conflict situation, whether it's at work or at home. The second point is psychological needs. So oftentimes in our relationships, we have unmet emotional or psychological needs. That happens in the workplace as well. So if we're not getting the recognition, if we've been passed over for whatever reason for a new position, whatever the case may be, those underlying psychological needs can also be a cause of conflict in the workplace. Lastly, we look at conflict over values. That can be anything from time management values and expectations between employees and managers, to how to come prepared to a meeting, to general work ethic and value in the workplace. So I encourage you to read both my articles and to think about a recent conflict that you've had in the workplace and if it was about conflict over resources, conflict over psychological needs, or conflict over values. The BRICS meeting in Xiamen in China last week was a timely opportunity for both India and China to end the high-altitude and potentially high-voltage stand-off at the Doklam plateau. Many political observers around the globe feared a spark, ignition and even a [email protected] Concurrent "cross-continent" threats by North Korea aimed at the US brought the situation to the brink. BRICS diplomacy, including its extremely well thought-out and carefully drafted declaration of 71 articles showed not only the mature intentions of five countries -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- in the messy world, but the sk!llful subtlety of India and China in avoiding a flash [email protected] in the Himalayas. But diplomacy can never be a long-term winner. As Henry Kissinger famously said: "It is a mistake to assume that diplomacy can always settle international disputes if there is good faith and willingness to come to an agreement. For diplomacy to sustain the win-win framework, it has to go beyond the apparent faith and trust. It has to be backed by the mutually beneficial implementation of the strategy." Fortunately, there is a game-changing and long-term win-win opportunity for both India and China whose time has come. Though the BRICS declaration is multilateral, India and China can take away the potentially strong bilateral messages on collaborative approaches on a number of issues that would make both countries lead global development. There are three key reasons that offer higher takeoff points for Xi and Modi to engage in a strategy that benefits people of both the countries. First, both of them have shown similar approaches to address the common challenges facing them on international platforms. Unprecedented air pollution, life-threatening climate change, resource-draining energy dependence, restless youth, serious unemployment, fast-urbanising population, the eroding agricultural base and terr0rism are the common challenges that the two largest- and fastest-growing countries have to face squarely.
