More fun with lost wax casting! This time I tried brass. Actually it's my first try ever at melting brass. I like a lot the feel and weight that has! In this video I set out to show that it´s perfectly possible to carry out lost wax investment casting with very basic equipment and using only readily available, low-cost materials. Here my wife and I use a charcoal-and-hairdryer furnace, beeswax and plaster from the builder´s merchant to cast a 20 cm (8") lizard from aluminium. This is my second attempt at investment casting and I do make mistakes. The main points are: Place sprues and vents in what will eventually be an inconspicuous position Be vigilant; until the first coat of plaster has hardened, the wax model is vulnerable to distortion Delicate extremities are a challenge as they go unvented, yet to vent them would be to obliterate all the detail. If you use ordinary plaster of Paris you must be meticulous about cooking the moisture from the mould in the oven. A gradual gradient is what´s needed, both as you heat it and as you let it cool. It should stay in the oven throughout the cooling procedure. Allow a generous supply of metal at the top of the sprue and vents. It serves as a reservoir from which the casting will draw metal as it contracts. De-gassing the metal might have improved the quality of my casting. A little sodium or potassium chloride would certainly have been a good idea. I might have done a better job of pouring had I been more sensible about the disposal of the dross and not stepped on it. Perhaps we might not have had to weld up the poorly-attached leg, as I slopped metal into the vent of the leg in question, perhaps causing the air bubble at the junction of the leg and the body.

Vacuum casting machines are expensive. But can you make one? YES… here’s a easy, simple construction, low cost vacuum arrangement to assist with you lost wax or lost PLA casting. Many of the parts you may already have lying around and the rest are cheap as chips. Building a vacuum system has literally saved me thousands and just as importantly it’s dramatically improved the quality of my metal castings… beautiful, clear and precise details matching exactly the original wax pattern, with no pockets, no porosity and no sand. This really is a cheap and simple solution to better lost wax casting! My thanks once again to Paul Hamler for partial use of his video. In restoration there are times that call for us to have to make a part from scratch. Often it requires that we machine a part from square or round metal stock, but sometimes there is a need for us to cast an item so that we can perfectly duplicate the original for the purpose of restoring the item back to new. Metal casting can also give us the ability to make extra stock for the future, should a part be a common failure on a vehicle with no aftermarket replacements. This video shows the process of casting in bronze using some old pieces and castings as our molten metal and using the “lost wax” casting technique that has been used for thousands of years. We hope that you will enjoy this video, and if so, please like or comment. My first lost wax casting was a total success!! The whole process has a lot of steps but really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. And for the high quality results it is totally worth it. There will be a second video of the casting of Alex's bronze flywheel for a hit miss engine he is making. That video will be coming as soon as I get it edited. Special thanks to Alex for wanting to use my setup to cast his flywheel so I could also do some lost wax casting! Look for people who have been in business a long time. Look for things like the ISO seals, because when investment casters are adhering to the ISO 9000 system they have committed to a quality program. A quality program generally means you have a reputable caster. Shelmet Investment Casting Company, Inc, has been in business for over 55 years and we are ISO 9008 certified which is part of the ISO9000 system. Different types of investment casting and precision casting have dated back a few thousands of years. Almost the same methods of melting metals, creating simple dies for multiple instances, and creating the finished metal casting used very similar techniques long ago. Highly detailed castings make investment castings the best choice for producing finished metal castings often produced from various alloys. Artworks of copper and bronze and even gold were created using precision casting techniques, because these metals and simple metal alloys were more easily obtainable. YouTube Casting Challenge : Creating a Maker Coin - a collaboration between VegOilGuy & SWdweeb with Lost Wax Casting and Sand Casting. It's a challenge , a friendly competition between friends to cast something different with a home foundry, something that will test and stretch our skills. It's a Maker Coin and we each have a 3D print to convert to something more coin like. It's small, it's got a lot of detail on it, and it's not as easy to cast as you may think. For my approach, I went with Lost Wax Casting, which is something I've never tried before. I needed to make a Silicone mould copy of the coin, then wax copies of the coin, surround these with investment, burn out the wax and replace this with hot metal, both aluminium and copper. It certainly tested me and I've still got a lot to learn. Useful Links and Reference... Lost wax casting or investment casting is used heavily in the jewelry making business to create beautiful pieces out of precious metals. With castable resins, there is no longer a need to hand carve wax models. Castable resins give more versatility andimmaculate details that are near impossible by hand. Lost Wax Casting with Joe Silvera (updated) This a new version of the lost wax casting overview video that I posted years ago. It has better video and audio quality and more information. Lost wax casting is making a wax model, molding it in plaster investment, burning out the wax in a kiln, and then filling the void with molten metal. The wax model is lost, but transformed into metal, like sterling, gold, etc. This video shows attaching the models to sprues, investing them in steel flasks, starting the burnout, centrifugal casting, cutting off and grinding off the sprues, and polishing with a tumbler, I hope you like it. We offer classes in lost wax casting and jewelry at Silvera Jewelry School in Berkeley, CA.

Update: I plan on making a new video this year to show the progression of our work. Better success rate and better looking final products. Coming soon! --------- We used merlin gold (fake gold) during this cast so don't freak out at the wasted gold you see! This is by no means a professional demo of how to do this. There are plenty of other videos out there showing that. This is not something I specialize in but just do it for fun. A lot of material is wasted during this process since I do this with teenagers and old equipment but they have fun learning and trying out new stuff. I made this video for kids that needed a quick reminder or missed the demo that day in the shop.
