The term "level of analysis" is used in the social sciences to point to the location, size, or scale of a research target. "Level of analysis" is distinct from the term "unit of observation" in that the former refers to a more or less integrated set of relationships while the latter refers to the distinct unit from which data have been or will be gathered. Together, the unit of observation and the level of analysis help define the population of a research enterprise. This video is targeted to blind users. What Is A Level Of Analysis? Nerd-out Wednesday

09:34
Most scientific fields have levels of analysis. My definition of a level of analysis is the focal point at which you analyze your environment, and the objects you choose to focus on. These are levels of generalization or abstraction from your phenomenon. There are three levels of analysis: (1) micro, (2) meso, and (3) macro levels of analysis. For example, economics has microeconomics, which is concerned with how people fulfill their needs, and macroeconomics, which is concerned with how the economy operates. Sociology has micro sociology which is concerned with how people work and play together and the individual processes that drive that. Macro-sociology is concerned with macro processes like how ideologies or values are diffused through populations. Psychology might be concerned with micro-effects like cognitive processes, and macro-effects like group processes. In political science, people analyze the individual, state, and international system as their level of analyses. This micro and macro theories of analysis even occurs in the natural sciences, like biology, physics and chemistry. For example, chemists focus on both the physical chemistry (macro) and the atomic chemistry (micro) properties of atoms. In between these micro and macro level of analysis is the meso level of analysis. This level is concerned with the middle ground, and how the micro and macro levels work together combine. Some scholars work on multi-level theories or cross-level theories, but this is quite uncommon given the difficultly of explaining a phenomenon. In science, there is a general trend towards micro-theories, and using micro-theories of analysis to explain macro-phenomenon. This process of moving from the macro to the micro is called atomization in science. Check out: What’s the Difference Between A Heuristic And A Bias In Decision-Making? What is FOREIGN POLICY ANALYSIS? What does FOREIGN POLICY ANALYSIS mean? FOREIGN POLICY ANALYSIS meaning - FOREIGN POLICY ANALYSIS definition - FOREIGN POLICY ANALYSIS explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Foreign policy analysis (FPA) is a branch of political science dealing with theory development and empirical study regarding the processes and outcomes of foreign policy. Foreign policy analysis is the study of the management of external relations and activities of state. Foreign policy involves goals, strategies, measures, methods, guidelines, directives, agreements, and so on. National governments may conduct international relations not only with other nation-states but also with international organizations and non-governmental organizations. Managing foreign relations need carefully considered plans of actions that are adapted to foreign interests and concerns of the government. Foreign policy analysis involves the study of how a state makes foreign policy. As it analyzes the decision making process, FPA involves the study of both international and domestic politics. FPA also draws upon the study of diplomacy, war, intergovernmental organizations, and economic sanctions, each of which are means by which a state may implement foreign policy. In academia, foreign policy analysis is most commonly taught within the discipline of public policy within political science or political studies, and the study of international relations. FPA can also be considered a sub-field of the study of international relations, which aims to understand the processes behind foreign policy decision making. The most prominent scholars in this field of study include Richard Snyder, James Rosenau, Alexander George, Graham Allison and Irving Janis. According to foreignpolicyanalysis.org, "As a field of study, foreign policy analysis is characterized by its actor-specific focus. In the simplest terms, it is the study of the process, effects, causes, or outputs of foreign policy decision-making in either a comparative or case-specific manner. The underlying and often implicit argument theorizes that human beings, acting as a group or within a group, compose and cause change in international politics." In other words, Foreign Policy Analysis can be understood as a critique of the dominant structuralist approaches in international relations. The making of foreign policy involves a number of stages: Assessment of the international and domestic political environment - Foreign policy is made and implemented within an international and domestic political context, which must be understood by a state in order to determine the best foreign policy option. For example, a state may need to respond to an international crisis. Goal setting - A state has multiple foreign policy goals. A state must determine which goal is affected by the international and domestic political environment at any given time. In addition, foreign policy goals may conflict, which will require the state to prioritize. Determination of policy options - A state must then determine what policy options are available to meet the goal or goals set in light of the political environment. This will involve an assessment of the state's capacity implement policy options and an assessment of the consequences of each policy option. Formal decision making action - A formal foreign policy decision will be taken at some level within a government. Foreign policy decisions are usually made by the executive branch of government. Common governmental actors or institutions which make foreign policy decisions include: the head of state (such as a president) or head of government (such as a prime minister), cabinet, or minister. Implementation of chosen policy option - Once a foreign policy option has been chosen, and a formal decision has been made, then the policy must be implemented. Foreign policy is most commonly implemented by specialist foreign policy arms of the state bureaucracy, such as a Ministry of Foreign Affairs or State Department. Other departments may also have a role in implementing foreign policy, such as departments for: trade, defence, and aid.

Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ The unit of analysis is the major entity that is being analyzed in a study. It is the 'what' or 'who' that is being studied. In social science research, typical units of analysis include individuals (most common), groups, social organizations and social artifacts. The literature of international relations provides a good example of units of analysis. In "Man, the State and War", Kenneth N. Waltz creates a tripartite analysis with three different units of analysis: the man (individual), the state (a group), and the international system (the system in which groups interact). This is not to be confused with the unit of observation, which is the unit described by one's data (neighborhoods using the U.S. Census, individuals using surveys, etc.). For example, a study may have a unit of observation at the individual level but may have the unit of analysis at the neighborhood level, drawing conclusions on neighborhood characteristics from data collected from individuals.

English school of international relations theory

10:12
The English School of international relations theory maintains that there is a 'society of states' at the international level, despite the condition of anarchy. The English school stands for the conviction that ideas, rather than simply material capabilities, shape the conduct of international politics, and therefore deserve analysis and critique. In this sense it is similar to constructivism, though the English School has its roots more in world history, international law and political theory, and is more open to normative approaches than is generally the case with constructivism. Introduction to International Relations - Theories of Constructivism

28:44
This discussion of Constructivism is the culmination of the first part of my Intro to IR class taught at Rutgers University in 2015. It brings a five to six-week segment of comparative theory to an end before the Midterm review. Topics include a discussion of the basic ideas of Constructivism, a comparison between Balance of Power and Balance of Threat, a consideration that states can employ a number of types of foreign policies simultaneously depending on the country in question, and a consideration of "Wilsonian Realism", which is a type of hybridized foreign policy of Liberalism and Realism that works together to create a considerably belligerent and aggressive foreign policy in the name of democracy, liberty, and freedom.
