Turkey's central bank has moved to limit speculation on the lira ahead of local elections this weekend, after recent falls against the US dollar. On Thursday, the bank lifted its lira swap sale limit from 20 to 30-percent for transactions that haven't matured. The move is designed to limit the lira's liquidity for foreign fund managers who want to bet against the currency. Political tensions, notably a high-level corruption scandal engulfing Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government are thought to have helped compound the latest slump. The drop marks another new record low against the dollar, with investors already concerned the country is ill-placed to cope with the US Federal Reserve raining in quantitative easing. Turkey has one of the biggest current account deficits of any major economy. The country's central bank has shied away, for the moment, from cutting interest rates, preferring to prop up the lira by selling Turkey's dollar reserves. People in chennai are falling behind the fake (turkish lira note /turkish currency) conversion process blabbering about K-series and L-series are valid and can be converted for huge crores. Turkey demonetised a series of notes in 2010. The demonetised notes cannot be used for transactions but can be exchanged at central bank offices. The government has given a 10 year window (10 years!) to exchange the notes which is quite something. (18 Jun 2018) Farmer Abdulkadir Cekic was already struggling to make a living, snowed under by a bank loan he took out for the purchase of a 130,000-euro (150,899 US dollar) harvesting machine. The tumbling of the Turkish currency, the lira, has hit him hard, considerably increasing the cost of his yearly paymen The country's economic troubles have emerged as a key issue as Turkey heads into presidential and parliamentary elections on 24 June. The elections will usher in a new governing system, switching Turkey from a parliamentary democracy to an executive presidency, following constitutional changes that were narrowly approved in a referendum last year. The post of prime minister will be abolished, concentrating even more power in the hands of the president. In May the lira slid to a series of record lows amid a global currency sell-off and some concerns over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's economic policies. The drop forced the Turkish Central Bank to sharply raise its key lending rate to try and stem an outflow of capital from the country, control inflation and support the beleaguered currency. The rate increase came despite Erdogan's strong pressure on the Central Bank to keep rates low. The increase helped the currency regain some of its value, but economists fear the country may not be out of the woods just yet. Erdogan opposes high interest rates which can support a currency and ease inflation but also hinder economic growth. Analysts say Erdogan, who has been in office since 2003 as prime minister and president and is vying for a new five-year term, called the elections more than a year earlier than scheduled as he saw that economic and financial trouble was brewing. It was not clear how much impact the volatility would have on the elections. In a bid to ease fears, Erdogan has also vowed fiscal discipline and moves to rein in inflation and current account deficit after the elections. At a market in Istanbul's Eminonu district, shoppers and sellers said they felt the pinch from the decline in the currency and double-digit inflation. The Turkish lira's slide was in part a global trend affecting the currencies of emerging markets, with investors shifting their money into higher-yielding investments in the United States. Turkey has been hit especially hard because of the political backdrop, including Erdogan exerting pressure on the central bank. Erdogan has won successive elections on the strength of a vibrant economy in the past 15 years. More recently though, he has adopted an increasingly authoritarian turn, cracking down on dissent and concentrating more powers in his hands. A state of emergency imposed following a 2016 failed military coup has allowed him to rule by decrees and has resulted in tens of thousands of arrests. Critics say Erdogan needs to abandon authoritarian policies and carry out liberal reforms in order to bring stability to the economy. A survey by the Ankara-based Metropoll research group conducted in April indicated that 50.6 percent of the respondents said their living conditions and welfare level had "deteriorated" in the past year. Only 16.6 percent said their conditions had improved. (25 May 2018) The tumbling Turkish lira has lost more than 20 percent of its value against the dollar since the start of the year, hurting many in Turkey. The country's economic troubles have emerged as a key issue as Turkey heads into presidential and parliamentary elections next month. The lira this week slid to a series of record lows amid a global currency sell-off and some concerns over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's economic policies. The drop forced the Turkish Central Bank to sharply raise its key lending rate on Wednesday to try and stem an outflow of capital from the country, control inflation and support the beleaguered currency. At a market in Istanbul's Kasimpasa district, where Erdogan was raised, shoppers and stall owners said on Friday that they felt the pinch from the decline in the currency and double-digit inflation. The rate increase came despite Erdogan's strong pressure on the Central Bank to keep rates low. The move helped the currency regain some of its value, but economists fear the country may not be out of the woods just yet. Erdogan opposes high interest rates which can support a currency and ease inflation but also hinder economic growth. Analysts say Erdogan, who has been in office since 2003 as prime minister and president and is vying for a new 5-year term, called the elections more than a year earlier than scheduled before a potential economic and financial meltdown could end his rule. It was not clear how much impact the volatility would have on the elections. Erdogan has won successive elections on the strength of a vibrant economy in the past 15 years. More recently though, he has adopted an increasingly authoritarian turn, cracking down on dissent and concentrating more power in his hands. We speak to Taha Arvas, financial columnist at the Daily Sabah newspaper. He says rising global energy prices are the main reason behind Turkey's soaring inflation rate. The only chance that Turkey has to stabilize the lira and stop further depreciation is to establish a currency board and anchor the lira to another reserve, like gold, said Steve Hanke, professor of Applied Economics at the Johns Hopkins University and senior fellow at the Cato Institute. “Under a currency board arrangement that was gold-based, the lira would trade at a fixed exchange rate to gold, be freely convertible, and it would be fully backed 100% by gold. So, the lira would literally be as as good as gold,” Hanke told Kitco News. Hanke noted that under this arrangement, inflation in Turkey would “collapse,” from 100% on an annual basis down to “almost nothing, overnight,” further stabilizing the lira. He added that this currency board arrangement is Turkey’s only option at preventing further lira depreciation at this point, as by definition, capital controls under a currency board with a fixed currency is not possible, and raising interest rates would also not be economically sound policy given the high inflation rate. “There’s no way that the lira will stabilize with the current system that they have. The inflation rate, as I measure it, is around 100% in Turkey right now, on an annual basis, and that implies that to get a real yield that’s positive, you’d have to have interest rates over 100% and that of course, that will kill the Turkish economy,” he said. Hanke added that Turkey is no stranger to lira collapses, as their currency has witnessed similar rapid depreciation in the past. “They’re slow learners,” he said. _________________________________________________________________ Kitco News is the world’s #1 source of metals market information. The Turkish lira has strengthened after the central bank raised one of its interest rates to... euronews, the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe for your daily dose of international news, curated and explained:http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a Euronews is available in 13 other languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU http://www.euronews.com/2013/07/23/turkish-central-bank-rate-change-boosts-the-lira The Turkish lira has strengthened after the central bank raised one of its interest rates to support the currency. Bank officials also said they would, if necessary, take further steps to stop the lira from falling. The overnight lending rate was put up to 7.25 percent from 6.5 percent. Raising that rate increases the real interest rate on lira assets and makes them more attractive to foreign investors, supporting the currency. Whether that in itself will be enough remains to be seen. The move was in response to capital outflows that have knocked the value of the lira down as much as nine percent against the dollar, despite attempts by the central bank to prop it up. The lira has been weakened by uncertainty over the US Federal Reserve's bond-buying stimulus programme and by widespread public demonstrations against the government last month. The bank kept other rates - such as its one-week repo policy rate and its benchmark borrowing rate unchanged. It is a major reversal by the central bank, which two weeks ago was railing against what it called the 'interest rate lobby' which it said was conspiring to manipulate interest rates. At that time it steadfastly refused to use a shift in interest rates to support the lira. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has long championed low interest rates, fearing an economic slowdown ahead of elections, but the central bank has already burned through $6.6 billion (five billion euros) of its reserves to try and boost the lira, a policy it cannot pursue indefinitely. Reassurances from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke last week over the pace of the US central bank's plans to withdraw monetary stimulus have boosted sentiment in emerging markets, lending support to the lira in recent days and taking some pressure off Turkey's central bank. Lira is the basic monetary unit of Turkey, equal to 100 kurus. The Ottoman Empire adopted the Ottoman lira in 1881, when it replaced the piastre (“piece of eight”). The Turkish lira replaced the Ottoman lira in 1927. The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey has the exclusive authority to issue banknotes and coins. The Turkish lira is divisible into 100 kurush. In 2005 a new Turkish lira was introduced at a rate equivalent to 1,000,000 old Turkish liras. Banknotes are issued in denominations ranging from 1 to 100 new liras. The obverse of each banknote contains an image of Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey and its first president (1923–38). Coins range in value from 1 kurush to 1 new lira.

July 19 -- Turkey’s lira declined after policy makers slowed the pace of interest-rate cuts. The currency fell 0.2 percent to 2.9823 per dollar at 2:03 p.m. in Istanbul as the central bank lowered the overnight-lending rate by 25 basis points to 8.75 percent, in line with expectations. Policy makers cut the rate by 50 basis points at each of its last three meetings. Even though attempts to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government were thwarted, they fueled concern about the nation’s security and the longer-term implications for the economy. The Turkish lira tumbled more than five percent on Wednesday (May 23) before recovering some ground, the latest drop in a sell-off that reflects growing investor alarm over the direction of monetary policy under President Tayyip Erdogan. The decline brings the lira's losses to more than 20 percent so far this year and puts it on track for its worst monthly performance since the 2008 financial crisis. "I think markets are beginning to take fright at the extent of government interference over certainly central bank policy," Commerzbank global financial economist Peter Dixon told Reuters. Residents and tourists in Istanbul commented on the drop on Wednesday, with one woman calling for "immediate intervention." A self-described "enemy of interest rates", Erdogan wants borrowing costs lowered to spur credit growth and construction, and he said last week he would seek greater control over monetary policy after elections set for June 24 . The sell-off has also increased expectations that the central bank may be forced to call an extraordinary meeting to raise interest rates before its next scheduled policy-setting meeting on June 7, as it has done in previous years. Borsa Istanbul Group, the Istanbul stock exchange company, said in a statement on Wednesday it had converted its foreign currency assets into lira, aside from its short-term needs, in a step to support the Turkish currency.

The Turkish government is taking legal action against hundreds of social media accounts which they claim has 'provoked' the ongoing plummet of the lira. Turkey's Interior Ministry said it has initiated legal investigations against 346 social media accounts 'which posted content provoking the dollar exchange rate.' The lira has lost more than 40 percent against the dollar this year, largely over worries about President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's influence over the economy, his repeated calls for lower interest rates, and worsening ties with the United States. Turkey's central bank raised interest rates by 300 basis points on Wednesday in an emergency move to ease the lira's fluctuations and investors' nerves. The top interest rate was lifted from 13.5 percent to 16.5 percent, pulling the currency back by about 2 percent from its historic low of over 4.9 liras per US dollar.
