A learning organization encourages personal mastery and cultivates open feedback to see problems and opportunities on all levels. Some argue that learning organizations attract and retain more talents. Others say that there is a competitive advantage for an organization whose people learn faster than the people of other organizations. Here are 6 characteristics most have in common: They Cherish: An Open Culture. Learning organizations encourage everyone to share information, admit to mistakes and practice giving and taking constructive criticism. Once the problem is found, they try to understand its root cause and fix it. To achieve such a culture: walls are removed, information is shared and leaders show their human sides. They Design and Implement: Feedback Loops Some establish 360 degrees surveys, in which people assess themselves, their peers and their bosses. Employees at 5-star hotels ask guests for their opinions. Top schools may videotape teachers so they can later study themselves. Some even make feedback a team effort. Before any new project, they all get together to kick things off. After the project they meet again to share and reflect on what has happened. They Promote: Personal Mastery Employees try to achieve personal mastery in their fields. Once they become experts, they feel proud of their work, they are motivated intrinsically and they can create positive change wherever they are. For example, a cleaner might come up with an idea on how to save water and an accountant on how to save bank fees. The job of the boss is to connect all experts and give directions. They Plan for: Intelligent Fast Failure. When they build something new, they don’t spend time to make assumptions on paper. Instead, they create what’s called Minimum Viable Product, a simple prototype with only the core functions. This is then presented to users as early as possible to test what they think. Because it is imperfect, even friends give their honest opinions. The goal: fail fast, but collect intelligent information so you can improve while going forward. They Steal: Best Practices Picasso apparently said that "good artists borrow, great artists steal". Learning organizations study others, steal best practices and then implement them fast. The newspaper The Economists took advice from George Orwell; its editors never use jargon if everyday English works. Printing manufacturers stole the razor-and-blades business model from Gillette, selling printers cheap but ink expensive. They Cultivate: A Common Vision A learning organization prospers when all members share a common vision. That way employees can understand the importance of their role, connect the dots and develop systems thinking. When goals are clear, regulations can be reduced and people can create their own personal benchmarks of success. This reduces bureaucracy, authority and corruption. Salesmen and author Zig Ziglar once wrote: "the only thing worse than training people and having them leave, is not training them and having them stay." At a learning organization education happens as a side-product of working together, as everybody learns from each other to adapt to whatever the future might bring.

And we'll be doing that by looking at different verbs that you can use, adjectives, nouns, and so on. Okay? But today in this lesson we will be focusing on eight verbs. But you might be asking: "Only eight verbs and I can become a manager?" Well, yes. "Why?" Because I'm going to show you how these eight verbs, to start with, can actually be used in hundreds of ways, in different collocations or combinations of words, so therefore you'll be able to use them in all kinds of situations. Definitely in professional situations, but also in social situations or personal situations. Okay? So, let's start right now. Okay. So let's suppose what you want to say in general English or regular English is something like this: "I need to find out what's wrong." Okay? Now, on this side is all the regular English or the general English. Okay? And on this side we're going to express the same idea, but in higher English, in more advanced business English or more professional English. And you're going to help me because I didn't write the word in yet. You're going to help me because perhaps you already know some of these words, but even if you know them you might not realize how many different ways we can actually use those same words, and that's what I want you to be able to do. Okay? So suppose your idea in your mind is that: "I need to find out what's wrong." So how can we say that in more professional English? "I need to", the verb starts with "i": "I need to _______ the problem. I need to identify the problem." Okay? So, our first word today is "identify". Say it after me: "identify the problem". Good. Now, suppose the idea you're trying to convey is: "I need to fix the problem." Okay? "Fix" is a very ordinary word, so what better word could we use here? "I need to _______ the issue or the issues. I need to", you might know this word. "I need to resolve", okay? So, "resolve" is just like "solve", but usually we say: "Solve the problem", but we might say: "Resolve the issue". And "resolve" is an even higher, more advanced word. And the higher vocabulary that you use, the more professional you will sound. Okay? And that's what our goal is. Right? Okay, next: "I need to give people confidence." So what's a good word or verb for that? "To give somebody confidence" is to, something starts with "m": "I need to _______ my employees. I need to..." Do you know this word? I'm sure you've heard it. "Motivate". Okay? Say it after me: "Motivate" or "motivate". You can say the "t"; sometimes it's easier and clearer for people to understand you when you say the "t". So let's say the "t" now: "Motivate. I need to motivate my employees" or: "I need to motivate my employees." Okay? Instead of saying: "I need to give people confidence", because you see that all the verbs here are very ordinary, everyday verbs, and those are higher-level verbs. Next: "I need to give clients my attention." Again, we have a very weak verb here, so how can you say that: "I need to give my attention to my clients or give clients my attention"? The word... The verb starts with "f": "I need to _______ on our clients." What's the verb? Do you know it? "I need to focus", okay? Say it after me: "Focus". Be careful how you pronounce this word because otherwise it can sound improper. All right? "I need to focus on our clients." Sounds a lot better than saying: "I need to give my attention to my clients." Okay? "I need to focus". Next: "I need to spend as little as possible". "Spend as little" means spend as little money. She explores scientific results that show the influence of the mindset on the body, and how changing the subjective mindset produced different outcomes. Dr. Crum's work is inspired in part by the placebo effect, and has implications that stretch far beyond the realm of medicine. Dr. Crum is a professor, psychologist, and researcher investigating how mindsets affect health and behavior. Dr. Crum's research focuses on how changes in subjective mindsets—the lenses through which information is perceived, organized, and interpreted—can alter objective reality through behavioral, psychological, and physiological mechanisms. Her work is, in part, inspired by research on the placebo effect, a notable and consistent demonstration of the ability of the mindset to elicit healing properties in the body. She is interested in understanding how mindsets affect important outcomes outside the realm of medicine, in the domains of behavioral health and organizational behavior. Managing perception in the workplace begins with asking others for feedback. Very few of us can feel confident that we truly know how we’re perceived. Getting opinions from people throughout the workplace will help in managing perceptions of you. Superiors, senior execs, subordinates, peers, customers, vendors, and others in your organization all have opinions about you. Perceptions of you may also differ between these groups. All of their perspectives are valuable for you to know, so ask people from all of these groups for their thoughts. Then look for patterns and themes in what they say. Asking for feedback can feel daunting, but if people are already thinking something about you, you need to know what it is. That way, you can change the perception if it doesn’t create the image you want people to see. If you’re already asking for feedback, congratulate yourself for doing so. Since not many people are brave enough to continually ask for feedback, this will give you a huge advantage. You might have to work on different aspects of managing workplace perception with the different groups mentioned. Keep in mind how you present yourself and appear to each group. Are you appearing a certain way in particular contexts, and another way in others? Learn the secrets of success from those who built their own empires from scratch. You can try adopting the habits of super rich people and see how it will help you save money. Successful people are rarely night owls; they go to bed and wake up quite early. So this was the first habit I decided to take on. By the end of the first week, I noticed that I was able to do way more before noon than I could ever do during the whole day. One more week into the experiment I started waking up completely well-rested and excited to start a new day. Self-made successes swear by exercising every day for at least 30 minutes. After just 10 days, it already became a habit. I became more concentrated and calmer. If meditating helps successful people stay on top of their game, it should help me out too. Networking is like currency for successful people. A lot of successful people (like Steve Jobs, for instance) keep a super minimalistic approach to fashion, often wearing the same outfit every day. Truly smart and successful people control their expenses and don’t spend their money on useless things. I started sleeping better and waking up easier. -Meditation turned out to be a really good way to get my head straight and renew my energy. -Even though I didn’t manage to tackle all my tasks, I was able to do more things in the first week than I did during the entire previous month. -I learned to find common ground with people from the get-go, met a lot of extraordinary individuals, and made some really good friends. -I carried a book with me at all times and read it on the way to work and back home or during lunch. As a result, by the end of the first month, I had finished my fourth book. -I no longer had to waste time every day choosing my outfit, deciding whether or not it matched or if it was trendy and whatnot. -I started out by making a list of everything that I bought every day so that I could see what I spent my money on. This system helped me save 40% of my salary in the first month and almost 60% in the second. -New habits really did completely change my life for the better. Most organisatons will encounter resistance to change, whether the change is perceived by employees as impacting them in a positive or negative way. Resistance can take many forms, it can be overt or covert, as well as active or passive. Organisational leaders cannot control the world changing around them, but they should try to understand employee groups within a change and move them quickly towards understanding resistance and acceptance of the change. Employee Groups involved in a Change Journey There are three groups of employees in any change management journey: ‘Advocates’, ‘Observers’ and ‘Rebels’. How does cultural awareness influence change management? What impact do the perceptions of change management have across global regional cultures? And, how do the cultural norms in your organization impact the effective application of change management practices? Transcript: I want to start first of all with a why. Why is it important to explore how cultural context can be used to customize a change management initiative? And the compelling why for this is to improve the effectiveness of our change management efforts. What is it that we can discern from a look at the cultural impacts, whether that is generally across regions or geographies or even within our own organizations? So let me show you from a cultural awareness perspective a data point. So one of the data points in the survey output is that 90% of the participants rated cultural awareness as either important or very important to their change management work. Now, if you look at the data here in terms of the actual statistics, if you count up what you see in the black bars on 2017 and that of 2015 which is represented in the purple, the Prosci purple, bars you'll see that the numbers add up to 90% in both cases but you also see a shift as people are saying that more and more it's very important. So what that tells us is that more and more organizations are understanding and valuing cultural awareness.

Quackery and pseudoscience can be very dangerous. Not only in medicine but also in human resources. Alarmed by the nonsensical ideas of Transactional Analysis, Patrick Vermeren set out on a mission to reveal the truth about the many HR theories, models and questionnaires. The academic literature revealed that most HR practices (in recruitment, assessment, development, coaching…) are very problematic and some even dangerous. In this Talk valid alternatives are presented. Patrick Vermeren has been active as a consultant, trainer and coach since 1996. He built on his experience at major Belgian banks ( Cera and Dexia) and an American multinational ( Procter & Gamble). Since he joined Perco he advises HR professionals and he guides groups and individuals in the areas of leadership, coaching and facilitating decision making in groups ( participation).
