Going Deep Underground in the Manhattan Mine
Spent an afternoon in the desert exploring the massive Manhattan Mine. This was a gold and silver mine that was worked from the early 1900s until the late 1940s. The Manhattan Mine's layout is very unique and somewhat confusing because a long, narrow, deep, crevice-like quarry was dug with tunnels and vertical shafts bisecting it at all angles. In fact, I was able to enter the mine by one tunnel and exit by another tunnel! While underground, I located a large, non-flooded vertical shaft with an impressive wooden headframe above it. There was also a lot of extensive underground tunneling. Outside, the quarry floor itself was pierced with vertical shafts that led to lower levels. Unfortunately, most of these shafts were all flooded with very deep water. At the end of this video, I discovered an unmapped, downward-sloping tunnel near the Manhattan Mine. This tunnel had water in it not too long ago and there were many hoof prints in it, so it seemed to be a watering hole for wild burros who actually enter the mine and walk down the sloping tunnel to where the water would be.

Exploring A High Sierra Placer And Lode Mine: Part 1 of 2
As mentioned in the thumbnail image, there are quite a lot of artifacts at this abandoned gold mine. I only show some of them in the first video because I was impatient to get inside of the large adit at this mine. However, after finishing exploring the underground section of the mine, we went out looking around the site more thoroughly and – among other things – discovered the remains of the miner’s bunkhouse. You’ll see in the second video that there were quite a few interesting artifacts at that location. How about those sketchy, rusted ladders seemingly running up into an infinite void? Metal ladders may sound secure, but whatever was anchoring those ladders in the past is no longer present and so they wobbled all over the place (they really didn’t seem like they would hold any weight at all). Furthermore, they were quite rusty and, at least in my experience, when I have encountered rusted metal underground, it has always been extremely brittle. I once accidentally brushed against a thick rusted cable inside of a mine and just that slight pressure snapped the cable. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I just brushed against it too. So, with that experience in mind, I was somewhat leery about climbing wobbly, rusted ladders straight up into the unknown. This was particularly the case given the collapsed section of ladders we already saw and was reinforced by coming across more sections with collapsed metal ladders deeper inside of the mine. At least the underground section of the mine up until the point where this first video ends was pleasant (going in through hard rock, not a lot of water, an absence of ground fall, etc.). In the second video? Not so much… The pelican really threw me… I grew up not far from the location of this abandoned mine and have never seen or heard of pelicans in the area. I normally associate pelicans with the ocean. However, I later recalled that there is a breeding colony of pelicans on Anaho Island at Pyramid Lake in Nevada. So, perhaps it was on a migration route over the Sierras? Regardless, it is still not the type of thing one expects to stumble across in the middle of the forest. ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy it. This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

Heading Underground at 'The Great Cwmystwyth Mines' in Wales
https://www.facebook.com/carlthepianist Photographers Andy T and Carl Lewis explore the subterrainain, 19th century Level Fawr of the Cwmystwyth mine. High up in the Cambrian Mountains, the young Afon Ystwyth flows through a deep glacial valley. Cwm Ystwyth is considered the most important non-ferrous metal mining site in Wales providing a premier example of mining heritage in Ceredigion. Within the site there is evidence for all phases of mining activity; from the Bronze Age, through the medieval period, to its revival in the 18th century and the peak of activity with a subsequent decline in the late 19th and the early 20th century. It has been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.[1] The site also features prominently in the Upland Ceredigion Landscape of Historic Interest. Our trip was prepared for a planned and we took all suitable precautions to protect our safety. Please see the following website for more information on the dangers of exploration and how to reduce risk: http://www.mine-explorer.co.uk/open-htm-white-paper.asp?id=1 Please ensure of you are both prepared and have permission before entering any mine of cave. How Raise Drill Works
Raise drilling is used to create large drill holes -- up to 7.6 meters in diameter. The holes, or tunnels, are used to connect mine shafts, power plant tunnels or channels for rainwater and surplus water, as well as for ventilation between different levels in a mine. This type of drilling is performed in two stages. First you drill a smaller pilot hole and then you swap the smaller drill bit with a reamer. The reamer is equipped with reels made of hardened metal which have the same diameter as the final hole. The hole is expanded as the reamer crushes the rock using both pressure and rotation. Raise drilling can be used for holes and tunnels of up to 1100 meters in length, which makes this method very practical for many applications.

World's Deepest Mine - Gold Alchemy
South Africa's TauTona mine, real life alchemy, and Halicephalobus Mephisto. Footage from the 2012 documentary, "Down to the Earth's Core". We have travelled into space and looked deep into the universe's depths, but the world beneath our feet remains unexplored and unseen. Now, that's about to change. For the first time in one epic unbroken shot, we embark on an impossible mission - using spectacular computer generated imagery to smash through three thousand miles of solid rock, and venture from our world into the underworld and on to the core of the Earth itself. It's a journey fraught with danger. One thousand feet down we find ourselves inside one of the planet's most volatile places - the San Andreas Fault. Caught between two huge rock slabs, we watch as stress builds and then releases. It unleashes an earthquake and blasts us on towards rivers of molten rock, explosive volcanoes, tears in the Earth's crust and giant tornadoes of liquid metal. But for every danger, there are wonders beyond imagination. Four hundred feet below the surface, a three hundred million year old fossilized forest, with every leaf and every piece of bark perfectly preserved. At one thousand feet down we enter a cave of giant crystals, glistening in deadly 122 degree heat. More than two miles underground we find buried treasure - gold and gems. Deeper still there are valuable resources - salt, oil, coal and iron. And over one hundred miles down we see the sparkling beauty of diamonds. As we descend we piece together our planet's extraordinary story. We rewind time to discover how prehistoric forests became modern-day fuel. 1700 feet down a layer of rock reveals the extraordinary story of the dinosaurs' cataclysmic death. We watch stalactites form and gold grow before our eyes. The deeper we travel into the underworld the more we understand our world above the surface. A bigger picture takes shape - a cycle of destruction and creation, driven by the core that sustains our dynamic planet and makes the Earth the only planet with life in a seemingly lifeless universe. Until, finally, three thousand miles down, we reach the core. Inside it lie the secrets of life as we know it - the magnetic force field that protects life on Earth from the sun's deadly rays, the ancient heat source that keeps our planet alive. Down to the Earth's Core brings the latest science together with breathtaking computer generated imagery. The result is an unmissable journey into an extraordinary world - full of dangers, wonders and secrets. And it's all down there, beneath our feet, right now waiting to be discovered.

How Lead is Mined & Refined: A Story Of Lead 1948 US Bureau of Mines; Lead Metal Mining & Refining
more at http://scitech.quickfound.net/geology_news_and_links.html "Portrays mining operations in the lead belt of southeast Missouri--the crushing of ore, smelting, refining and other steps in the production of pig lead." Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead Lead has been commonly used for thousands of years because it is widespread, easy to extract and easy to work with. It is highly malleable as well as easy to smelt. Metallic lead beads dating back to 6400 BCE have been found in Çatalhöyük in modern-day Turkey. In the early Bronze Age, lead was used with antimony and arsenic. The largest preindustrial producer of lead was the Roman economy, with an estimated annual output of 80,000 tonnes, which was typically won as a by-product of extensive silver smelting. Roman mining activities occurred in Central Europe, Roman Britain, the Balkans, Greece, Asia Minor and Hispania which alone accounted for 40% of world production. Roman lead pipes often bore the insignia of Roman emperors (see Roman lead pipe inscriptions). Lead plumbing in the Latin West may have been continued beyond the age of Theoderic the Great into the medieval period. Many Roman "pigs" (ingots) of lead figure in Derbyshire lead mining history and in the history of the industry in other English centers. The Romans also used lead in molten form to secure iron pins that held together large limestone blocks in certain monumental buildings. In alchemy, lead was thought to be the oldest metal and was associated with the planet Saturn. Alchemists accordingly used Saturn's symbol (the scythe, ♄) to refer to lead. Up to the 17th century, tin was often not distinguished from lead: lead was called plumbum nigrum (literally, "black lead"), while tin was called plumbum candidum (literally, "bright lead")... Most ores contain less than 10% lead, and ores containing as little as 3% lead can be economically exploited. Ores are crushed and concentrated by froth flotation typically to 70% or more. Sulfide ores are roasted, producing primarily lead oxide and a mixture of sulfates and silicates of lead and other metals contained in the ore. Lead oxide from the roasting process is reduced in a coke-fired blast furnace to the metal. Additional layers separate in the process and float to the top of the metallic lead. These are slag (silicates containing 1.5% lead), matte (sulfides containing 15% lead), and speiss (arsenides of iron and copper). These wastes contain concentrations of copper, zinc, cadmium, and bismuth that can be recovered economically, as can their content of unreduced lead. Metallic lead that results from the roasting and blast furnace processes still contains significant contaminants of arsenic, antimony, bismuth, zinc, copper, silver, and gold. The melt is treated in a reverberatory furnace with air, steam, and sulfur, which oxidizes the contaminants except silver, gold, and bismuth. The oxidized contaminants are removed by drossing, where they float to the top and are skimmed off. Since lead ores contain significant concentrations of silver, the smelted metal also is commonly contaminated with silver. Metallic silver as well as gold is removed and recovered economically by means of the Parkes process. Desilvered lead is freed of bismuth according to the Betterton-Kroll process by treating it with metallic calcium and magnesium, which forms a bismuth dross that can be skimmed off. Very pure lead can be obtained by processing smelted lead electrolytically by means of the Betts process. The process uses anodes of impure lead and cathodes of pure lead in an electrolyte of silica fluoride...

Hydrogen Sulfide Death in an Underground Mine 1973
Hydrogen sulfide occurs naturally and is also produced by human activities. Just a few breaths of air containing high levels of hydrogen sulfide gas can cause death. Lower, longer-term exposure can cause eye irritation, headache, and fatigue. For more on hydrogen sulfide, go to the ATSDR website at http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts114.html#bookmark01 . This is clipped from the 1973 Bureau of Mines film, Breathe and Live: Ventilation in Metal and Nonmetal Mines (21 minutes).

Underground In the Congress Mine
The Congress mine is centred near the north shore of Carpenter Lake, latitude 50° 52' 00", longitude 122° 43' 35", west of the mouth of Gun Creek, six kilometres northeast of Gold Bridge on Highway 40 (Figure 10a). The property was first visited in 1985. Geological mapping was completed by the writer during several visits to the property in 1986 and Ace adit was examined and sampled. The Howard adits and Lou decline surveyed in July 1988. History The property, consisting of the Congress mine and several nearby mineral prospects, is owned jointly by Levon Resources Limited and Veronex Resources Limited. The claim block includes a number of reverted Crown-granted claims including Stibnite 1-4, Snowflake fraction, Turner 1, Turner 2, Robert fraction, David fraction, Nap 1, 3 to 9 and Ace 17, 18, 20, 22, 23, 28. The history of the Congress property began about 1910 when the 'Northstar-University' vein was found, following the earlier discovery of placer gold on Gun Creek. The Congress vein was staked by E.J. Taylor and J. Shuster in 1913 and, according to Cooke et al.(1986), C.H. Allan and Associates produced a small amount of gold-antimony ore from a short adit. Congress Gold Mines Limited acquired the property from T. Turner in 1933 and developed three adit levels on the Congress zone between 1934 and 1937. During this period 940 tonnes of ore was tested at the Wayside mill; this yielded 2.58 kilograms of gold, 1.31 kilograms of silver and 38 kilograms of copper. From 1946 to 1950 Sheep Creek Gold Mines Limited managed the property and developed two additional underground levels at the Congress mine and connected the workings with an inclined shaft. In 1959 the Howard vein was discovered 900 metres west of the Congress mine. Ownership of the property passed to the Ace Mining Company Limited then, under option agreement, to Bralorne Pioneer Mines Limited from 1960 to 1964. In this period Bralorne Pioneer Mines Limited did underground work on the Howard vein and continued drifting at the Congress mine while also carrying out programs of surface and underground drilling. The Howard vein was drifted on for about 160 metres at this time, also several new mineralized zones were discovered, including the Bluff zone northeast of the Congress mine and the Paul zone on the north side of Gun Creek, 1.5 kilometres north of the previous discoveries. In 1965 the Ace Mining Company drilled the Paul zone and did other prospecting on the property. Additional exploration was undertaken by Rayrock Exploration Limited. in 1964 and Alice Arm Mining Limited in 1972. In 1975 Alice Arm was reorganized as New Congress Resources, Limited and, over the next five years completed much drilling and drifting on the Howard zone. The property was acquired by Levon Resources Limited in 1982 and under option agreement Veronex Resources Limited funded continuation of the exploration program. The principal exploration has been diamond drilling and underground development of the Howard and Lou zones in 1984 to 88, and a bioleaching pilot project in 1988 and 1989. (Due to the overall fine-grained nature of the ore and the association of gold and silver with arsenopyrite and stibnite, a 250,000-litre capacity biological leaching pilot plant was installed in the Plateau Pond area near the west boundary of the property with the collaboration of Giant Bay Resources Limited. A 600-tonne test sample for this plant was mined from the Howard and Ace workings of the mine). No further work has been done on the property because of disappointing results at a time of low metal prices. Back to top Top Description The Congress property is underlain by a panel of Pioneer pillow lavas and associated basalt feeder dikes and small cogenetic gabbro bodies (Church, 1986a; Cooke, 1986c). These rocks are bounded on the east and west by cataclastic facies of the Fergusson assemblage, including milled ribbon chert, phyllite, graphitic schist, and some marble lenses (Figure 11a). Feldspar porphyry dikes of Tertiary age are conspicuous in the mine workings as well as areas of fracturing and faulting. The ore is relatively simple consisting mainly of pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite in discontinuous northerly trending quartz veins accompanied by carbonate alteration.

The Only Existing Underground Footage of the Earl Wage Mine! Wow!
NOTE: This video contains the ONLY known footage of the interior (and exterior) of the historic Earl Wage Mine. This new video of the mine is an edited version of another recently uploaded video that I have since deleted. In this newer, edited version, the name of the mine and some other details have been obscured due to security and safety concerns that were brought to my attention. Thanks for watching (or re-watching if you saw the original, un-edited video)! The Earl Wage Mine was a forgotten, pristine, and undisturbed mine that we discovered in a remote, hard-to-reach area of the desert. It was readily apparent that nobody had been in it for decades after it officially closed in the 1950s. Reaching it required that we drive nine miles across unforgiving, difficult, and road-less desert terrain and then turn into a narrow canyon at the base of a mountain. As soon as we turned into the canyon we began seeing a lot of mining debris that had been washed down over the decades. We found the Earl Wage Mine to be in an extremely well-preserved state with absolutely NO signs of any recent visitation or disturbance. We found ore carts laying in the wash outside the mine. We found an ore cart in the mine. We found newspapers and bottles and snuff cans from the 1920s. We found a turn-of-the-century, vintage wheelbarrow in the mine. It was a mine crying out for historical video documentation before the forces of nature and time seal it permanently. The Earl Wage Mine is accessed by a 700-foot long inclined shaft. There are approximately nine drift levels along its length totaling around 7000 feet of workings. We descended all the way to the bottom of the inclined shaft and thoroughly explored and filmed all the drift levels for the first time ever. Enjoy the video and the exclusive footage of the historic Earl Wage Mine!
