Investing in America: Infrastructure, Competition, Roads, Bridges, Railways, Transit (2014)
Investment in infrastructure is part of the capital accumulation required for economic development and may have an impact on socioeconomic measures of welfare. The causality of infrastructure and economic growth has always been in debate. In developing nations, expansions in electric grids, roadways, and railways show marked growth in economic development. However, the relationship does not remain in advanced nations who witness more and more lower rates of return on such infrastructure investments. Nevertheless, infrastructure yields indirect benefits through the supply chain, land values, small business growth, consumer sales, and social benefits of community development and access to opportunity. The American Society of Civil Engineers cite the many transformative projects that have shaped the growth of the United States including the Transcontinental Railroad that connected major cities from the Atlantic to Pacific coast; the Panama Canal that revolutionized shipment in connected the two oceans in the Western hemisphere; the Interstate Highway System that spawned the mobility of the masses; and still others that include the Hoover Dam, Trans-Alaskan pipeline, and many bridges (the Golden Gate, Brooklyn, and San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge).[37] All these efforts are testimony to the infrastructure and economic development correlation. European and Asian development economists have also argued that the existence of modern rail infrastructure is a significant indicator of a country’s economic advancement: this perspective is illustrated notably through the Basic Rail Transportation Infrastructure Index (known as BRTI Index) During the Great Depression of the 1930s, many governments undertook public works projects in order to create jobs and stimulate the economy. The economist John Maynard Keynes provided a theoretical justification for this policy in The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money,[39] published in 1936. Following the global financial crisis of 2008–2009, some again proposed investing in infrastructure as a means of stimulating the economy (see the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009). While infrastructure development may initially be damaging to the natural environment, justifying the need to assess environmental impacts, it may contribute in mitigating the "perfect storm" of environmental and energy sustainability, particularly in the role transportation plays in modern society.[40] Offshore wind power in England and Denmark may cause issues to local ecosystems but are incubators to clean energy technology for the surrounding regions. Ethanol production may overuse available farmland in Brazil but have propelled the country to energy independence. High-speed rail may cause noise and wide swathes of rights-of-way through countrysides and urban communities but have helped China, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, and other nations deal with concurrent issues of economic competitiveness, climate change, energy use, and built environment sustainability. Research into packet switching started in the early 1960s. The ARPANET in particular led to the development of protocols for internetworking, where multiple separate networks could be joined together into a network of networks The first two nodes of what would become the ARPANET were interconnected on 29 October 1969.[58] Access to the ARPANET was expanded in 1981 when the National Science Foundation (NSF) developed the Computer Science Network (CSNET). In 1982, the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) was standardized and the concept of a world-wide network of fully interconnected TCP/IP networks called the Internet was introduced. TCP/IP network access expanded again in 1986 when the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) provided access to supercomputer sites in the United States from research and education organizations.[59] Commercial internet service providers (ISPs) began to emerge in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The ARPANET was decommissioned in 1990. The Internet was commercialized in 1995 when NSFNET was decommissioned, removing the last restrictions on the use of the Internet to carry commercial traffic.[60] The Internet started a rapid expansion to Europe and Australia in the mid to late 1980s[61][62] and to Asia in the late 1980s and early 1990s.[63] During the late 1990s, it was estimated that traffic on the public Internet grew by 100 percent per year, while the mean annual growth in the number of Internet users was thought to be between 20% and 50%.[64] As of 31 March 2011, the estimated total number of Internet users was 2.095 billion (30.2% of world population). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrastructure

Korean manufacturers shift investment from China to Vietnam: KERI
한국 제조업 투자대상, 중국서 베트남으로 옮겨가 A report released by the Korea Economic Research Institute shows a shift of focus of Korean companies' overseas investment, with more and more firms investing in Vietnam. Our Kim Hyesung has the details. Overseas direct investment by Korean manufacturers is moving from China to Vietnam due to corporate tax benefits and deregulation policies. According to the Korea Economic Research Institute, China accounted for about 28 percent of Korean manufacturing companies' overseas investment in 2017, down 17 percent from the 2000s. In contrast, overseas investment into Vietnam increased by 12 percent over the same period, accounting for near 18 percent of Korean manufacturing firms' total investment last year. Many small and mid-sized manufacturers in particular have moved their investment to Vietnam. Their investment in Vietnam surpassed their investment in China for the first time in 2014, and last year reached 720 million U.S. dollars, or 1-point-seven times the amount of investment in China. Large manufacturers' investment in China has been declining, but is still about two-point-five times higher that invested into Vietnam. The report attributed the shift in investment to changes in the business environment and government policies. Since 2008, China has raised foreign companies' corporate tax rates, getting rid of its lowest 15 percent rate, and instead setting a blanket rate of 25 percent, with the exception of some high tech industries. It has also restricted investment in sectors like low-value added goods that cause pollution. Vietnam, on the other hand, has exempted foreign-invested high-tech companies from corporate taxes for four years, and eased regulations on foreign investors' acquisition of real estate. In addition, China's labor costs have continued to increase, making Vietnam's minimum wage about half that of China's. Kim Hyesung, Arirang News. Indian Roots, American Soil: Adding Value to U.S. Economy and Society
For many Indian companies, international expansion constitutes an integral part of their overall growth strategy today. Through green-field ventures, collaborative partnerships, investments and most significantly, through mergers and acquisitions, Indian companies have experienced robust growth, which forms the bedrock of furthering business ties, fueling economic development and improving the quality of lives globally. India's increasing integration with the global economy is evident in its burgeoning outflows of Foreign Direct Investment over the past decade. According to the Reserve Bank of India, the United States stands among the top five destinations of Indian investments made overseas. While business cooperation between India and the United States predates India's independence, it was only much after economic liberalization, in mid-1990's, that Indian companies seriously began looking for commercial opportunity in the U.S. In fact, Indian companies are still rather young in the U.S. market, having established operations, on average, only about 18 years ago! The incredible impact that Indian industry has already started making on the U.S. economy, society and local communities is quite evident. Indian companies are today spread across 40 states in America, collectively generating revenues in the billions and saving and creating thousands of jobs. Their R&D spend is on the incline, reflecting a strong focus on innovation and commercialization of products and services. They are also partnering with universities and colleges to create training programs that help prepare the local workforce for high-skilled jobs. Their community engagement does not stop here. Many of the companies are partnering with local non-profit organizations to support a variety of programs and initiatives for the betterment of the community. In the report, one will see that these organizations have truly become "global" citizens, spreading Indian Roots on American Soil and actively participating in the communities in which they operate.

The Real 'Wolf of Wall Street'?
In the mid 1990s, Leonardo DiCaprio was the king of the world. The baby-faced movie star was about to play the leading role in Titanic, and he spent some of his time hanging with Dana Giacchetto, a former investment banker and member of the new wave group Breakfast in Bed, at Giacchetto's penthouse loft on Broadway and Cortlandt in Manhattan. The two friends owned matching cockatoos named Angel and Caesar and hosted lavish parties for the most powerful people in 90s film, fashion, and finance: Michael Stipe, Andrew Cuomo, Kate Moss, Winona Ryder, Harmony Korine, and Alanis Morissette, among other celebrities. In between doing the things that happen at late-night parties, including spraying vintage champagne everywhere, some guests made million-dollar late-night deals—at least that's what Giacchetto claims. His high life crashed down on him when he was arrested in 2000 and pleaded guilty to fraud under the Investment Advisers Act. After that, most of his clients left him, and the court sentenced him to a maximum of 57 months in prison for misappropriating approximately $9 million. Thanks to good behavior, time already served in prison, and his willingness to enter rehab, he was released early, but his life has never been the same. Giacchetto's downfall began in 1988, when his mother, Alma, loaned him almost $200,000 so he could found the Cassandra Group. Giacchetto already worked as an account executive at Boston Safe Deposit & Trust, and he used his bona fides to persuade friends in new wave and punk bands to put money in an investment group for cool, arty people. Thanks to his business skills and rock cred, Giacchetto started working with Sub Pop Records, the iconic indie label that was simultaneously broke and famous for releasing Nirvana's first album, Bleach. Soon after, Giacchetto worked as the money manager for all of Sub Pop's acts, as well as for the Smashing Pumpkins, Alanis Morissette, Phish, Victoria Williams, Q-Tip, R.E.M., and many of their agents and managers. Giacchetto went to prison for stealing $9 million from a number of these clients, including Phish, who lost more than $1 million, according to the New York Times. The Securities and Exchange Commission had discovered improprieties in Cassandra's bookkeeping dating back to September 1997. (Giacchetto had used a version of the classic "asset-kiting scheme," in which one asset is borrowed to cover the disappearance of another.) Prosecutors alleged that Giacchetto's scheme involved improperly tapping into the accounts of the Cassandra Group's clients and ordering checks from financial services firm Brown & Co. He was able to cash them at the US Trust even though some checks were made out to celebrities like Ben Stiller. "I was someone who was extraordinarily successful, beyond his wildest dreams, and I flew too close to the sun and, you know, got really burned," he told us when we met him in New York this summer. After telling us he didn't have too much time to talk because he had to meet with his lawyer and the FBI, he insisted on his innocence and maintained that he had been accused and convicted because Hollywood insiders were trying to keep him out of the elite, high-powered, celebrity life of Hollywood that he saw as a kind of Mount Olympus. "I think that there is some truth in the idea that there is this vapid vacuum still that is Hollywood—sometimes because it's a business built on artifice, fantasy," he said. "It doesn't mean that it's not legitimate. It just means that, contextually, you have to sort of put it into place, and I think people do get envious of that." At every meeting, Giacchetto promised us he would bring photos from his years with DiCaprio. We didn't believe him, but at our last interview, Giacchetto brought a Travelpro expandable luggage bag full of hundreds of photos, like these pictures of DiCaprio partying. As Giacchetto flipped through the pictures, he reminded us of a father showing photos of his children, not because Giacchetto liked bragging about his 90s debauchery but because these celebrities were once his friends. When he went to jail, many of them abandoned him. This hasn't stopped Giacchetto from doing business with the rich and famous, of course. Along with his phone-app gig with Pavitt, he's repping a new line of luxury food items that will enable you to eat lobster thermidor straight from the can. China Data Will Crash Apple Stock? Stock Market Today & What To Watch Next Week
THE STOCK MARKET IS GOING TO GAP DOW NEXT WEEK!? I said that last time and people got salty, but I think I was just one week too early. Then again, my other view is that we over shot on the downside so my earnings calls should make up for any overly bearishness. Nonetheless, there are some key events happening next week and some that have already started today. Putting them all together, I think that they will have an effect on the stock market, and I have been watching Apple stock as a potential play due to the exposure. The key events revolve around China trade data, which will include the Chinese balance of trade and their import and export numbers. This could show a much more serious slowdown and panic the market. Further, with the government shutdown entering its longest period ever, today banks like JPM announced they would cut the GDP forecasts for the USA if the shutdown persists. Markets reacted to this somewhat, but I discuss how this is brewing up a really intense political situation that would have an effect on the markets! Beyond Borders: A Worthy Investment? - Salton Sea, California Become a Beyond Borders Member https://www.patreon.com/beyond_borders LIKE / SHARE / COMMENT In this episode, host Erik Niel travels to the Salton Sea in Southern California to highlight the environmental catastrophe that looms over this accidental lake, and the surrounding area. Years of agricultural runoff have turned this mid-century resort into a decaying waste. As the sea evaporates, it threatens to release the toxic sediments from the runoff into the agricultural Imperial Valley via the Santa Ana winds. If this occurs, California may face perhaps the greatest manmade catastrophe in its history.
Breaking News - Market correction due by mid-2019, say investment experts
Most professional investors predict a sudden plunge in global stock markets of at least 10 per cent before the middle of 2019, a new survey suggests. Some 71 per cent of money experts believe markets are due a correction in that time frame, while 16 per cent think it could take longer to happen, but 12 per cent don't expect a substantial drop at all.Global markets have soared in recent years, and more than a third reckon the most likely trigger for a slump is fear stocks have become overpriced, according to the survey of investment and pension fund bosses by Managing Partners Group.Top US markets have racked up an impressive run of records last year and into 2018, while London's FTSE 100 is also currently trading at all-time highs.Anticipation of massive corporate tax cuts in the US, cheerled by President Donald Trump and passed by Congress in December, have helped fuel the gains across the world. But some market pundits have long warned that US stocks in particular are overpriced, and that at some point this will cause a stampede for the exit.In the MPG survey, other possible reasons cited for a market correction were a 'black swan' event - meaning some random surprise - a world crisis like a conflict involving North Korea, a rise in interest rates, a financial mess in China or Europe, and central banks halting their money printing programmes.Among the professional investors who expect a market correction in the fairly near future, 36 per cent believe it will be contained at 10-15 per cent. Some 28 per cent are more pessimistic, forecasting a plunge of 15-20 per cent. And 32 per cent predict more of a crash, with losses of 20-30 per cent. But just 4 per cent think it will be even worse, with 30-40 per cent wiped off markets.MPG reports that 20 per cent have already changed their portfolio in the expectation of a market correction, while a further 37 per cent plan to do so soon.Of those who have switched up investments, 90 per cent have reduced their exposure to stocks and 30 per cent to fixed income assets - government and corporate bonds. Some 40 per cent have switched to cash, 50 per cent to alternatives such as hedge funds and 40 per cent to real estate.Jeremy Leach, chief executive of Managing Partners Group, said: 'Equities are looking highly valued on both sides of the Atlantic and it looks as though the market is just looking for an excuse to correct.'Our research shows that a substantial proportion of investors now expect this to happen and many have already reduced exposure to equities while looking at alternatives.'Managing Partners Group specialises in managing alternative asset classes for institutions and sophisticated investors. In December, it interviewed 54 institutional investors - professionals in roles including pension fund managers, chief risk officers, chief financial officers and chief investment officers. Mid-Year Outlook: Why We’re Still Bullish on the Markets
Chris Hyzy, Chief Investment Officer, Bank of America Global Wealth & Investment Management – Following an usual period of calm in 2017, market volatility returned with a vengeance at the start of this year, prompting concerns that the second longest bull market in U.S. history could be coming to an end. While we don’t see the volatility going away, in fact, it’s somewhat dormant right now. There are a number of reasons we’re optimistic that the bull run in equities, more specifically, U.S. Equities, still has room to go.

How to Solve America's Spending Problem
Everyone complains about America's debt, and rightly so, but how do we get out of it? As Cato Institute's Michael Tanner explains, spending on entitlement programs -- Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid -- has exploded in recent decades. We must slow their growth or they will soon swallow the entire federal budget. In five minutes, learn how America can preserve these programs and get out of debt. And well they should. The numbers defy comprehension. Currently, the debt stands at around $17 trillion dollars, much of that coming in just the last few years. To put it simply, our government spent $17 trillion dollars more than it took in. That’s one huge deficit, wouldn’t you say? How did it happen? To answer that, we have to focus on three programs: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Social Security is a government pension program for people over 65; Medicare is a government health insurance program for people over 65; and Medicaid is a government health assistance program for people who can’t afford to buy insurance. The debt picture has admittedly become a little more complicated -- and more severe -- because of the massive increases in government spending on unemployment benefits and other federal assistance programs related to the 2009 recession. But the big three - Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid - remain at the center of the problem. In fact, spending in every other area, including defense, all other appropriations, and other federal entitlements, though significant, make up a smaller share of the economy than has historically been the case. These three programs are not new. The first Social Security check was issued on January 31, 1940. Medicaid and Medicare came into existence in the mid-sixties during the administration of Lyndon Johnson. All three programs were greatly expanded in 1972 during the Nixon Administration. And every year they gobble up more and more of the Federal budget. How much more? Just listen to these numbers from the Congressional Budget Office: In 1970 these three programs accounted for 21 % of all federal spending. By 2012 they accounted for 42% of all federal spending. And now we’ve added a fourth new Federal assistance program, the Affordable Care Act of 2010, otherwise known as ObamaCare. Just to give you one example, Medicare Part B, the part of Medicare that covers doctors’ services, was originally projected to cost $500 million dollars a year. In 2012 it cost $164 billion. Whatever you think about the value of these programs: How are we going to pay for them? The Congressional Budget Office projects that before today’s 25 year olds are ready to receive Medicare, these four programs -- Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act -- are expected to cost more than all the money the government collects in taxes. That would mean we would have to borrow money to pay for everything else -- our armed forces, road repair, everything. So, what do we do? Well, we could increase taxes -- massively. But to raise the kind of money we’d need, we’d have to significantly increase taxes on everybody, especially the middle class. That means taking a lot more money out of your paycheck and mine. Because if you think we could get what we need from the rich, think again. If we took all the earnings of people who make more than a million dollars, a 100% income tax, that would only net us a little more than $600 billion dollars. And obviously, we could only do that only once. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/how-solve-americas-spending-problem
