Pushing for Renewable Energy in Indonesia

05:08
JAKARTA - The partnership between the Financial Service Authority and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has been realized by the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) to the agreement for the Renewable Energy Development. The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Sudirman Said, explained that Indonesia has 12,669 villages which still do not have the access to electricity, and 2,519 are still in total darkness. There are 6 provinces from east to west Indonesia while 70% is in the east. Eastern provinces include Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB), North and South Maluku. Within the next three to four years, they will focus to overcome the lack of electricity in eastern areas. He also explained, that renewable energy development has not been growing for the last 5 to 7 years, and at the moment renewable energy only comprises 6.8% of the total energy produced in Indonesia. But the good news is within 2 weeks from now, they will be ready announce clean energy in Bali, or up to 90% clean energy for the island. And it will be opened internationally for research and development. (WY)

In today’s world energy has become one crucial component to sustain mankind’s living system. On daily basis, huge amount of energy is needed to support countless different activites. However, do you really understand what energy security is? how important the role of energy security itself in Indonesia? As a citizen, how can i contribute to preserve energy security of Indonesia? Please kindly find out the answers by watching our video! The worldwide consumption of energy is very high, and it doesn’t go hand in hand with the number of resources and production. Energy security has always been crucial for the economic development of human societies and are important both as intermediate inputs for production and transport and as final outputs that are necessary for basic human welfare and the economic growth (FDI) of that country. Energy security, as defined by the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Agenda Council on Energy Security, is the reliable, stable and sustainable supply of energy at affordable prices and at an acceptable social cost. Therefore, energy security can only be achieved efficiently through global cooperation, mutual interdependence of producing and consuming nations, and not isolation. The issue of energy security in Indonesia should be addressed by the four main actors such as; Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, State Owned Enterprises, Private Company and International Organizations. In Indonesia itself, the consumption of crude oil increased for more than 50 percent from 2000 to 2010, the production decreased also by 50 percent in 2012 (from 1,6 million barrels to 861,000 barrels per day). Recently, the government is continuously cutting of Indonesia’s BBM subsidy to secure country’s energy security. However, the policy greatly affects the consumer of BBM subsidy, especially to the transportation industry. Through this high concern, Indonesia needs to provide more doable strategies to secure its energy security, such as switching the high usage of oil to geothermal energy, biofuel, bioethanol or other renewable energy, re-considering the subsidy given on fuel transactions. As citizen, simple thing that we may contribute to sustain energy security in Indonesia is by using public transportation and switch from using BBM subsidy to Pertalite fuel for its eco-friendlier quality and efficiency.

Biogas—Indonesians Cook Green With Cheap LPG Alternative

01:51
For more news visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Follow us on Facebook ☛ http://facebook.com/NTDTelevision For some residents in Bali, Indonesia, biogas has become an alternative energy source for cooking. The energy which comes from cattle dung is proving to be cost-effective as well as green. Here's more from our correspondent in Bali. A resident of Kerta Village in Bali, Wayan Sutri, doesn't worry about the rising cost of LPG and kerosene, used by many as energy for cooking. It's because Sutri and dozens of other villagers are turning cattle dung onto bio-gas. It all started with Sutri's husband who had some knowledge of the procedure. They've now been using the methane gas for two years. [Wayan Sutri, Biogas User]: "Since I began using this biogas, I feel it's very safe. And I can reduce my daily shopping budget as it's no longer necessary to buy gas." Sutri makes biogas in quite a simple way. She uses a concrete reactor dome with a 6-cubic-meter capacity, an inlet with a diameter of 50 centimeters, a water pipe, and a special biogas stove. The methane biogas from cattle dung has become the villagers' first choice in green, sustainable energy. In developing countries like Indonesia, biogas is receiving increasing attention as an alternative to fossil fuel. Indonesia's tropical climate is especially suitable for the fermentation process needed in producing methane. The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources says they are planning to develop 800 biogas installation units in 6 Indonesian provinces—including Bali—this year. NTD News, Bali, Indonesia.

Science Behind the Biggest Global Hazard in Feb 2018, the Sinabung Volcano Eruption! GEONEWS EP2

02:35
1mins23sec got a mistaken spelling. The word should be 'Hydrated', not 'Hyrated'. Thanks to Dr. Richard W. Carlson from Carnegie Institution for Science. One of the Asian most active volcanoes, Mount Sinabung, exploded on Feb 19, and created a 5 kilometers volcanic ash plume into the air. But, why is the explosion so violent? It is because the Mont Sinabung locates at the Indo-Australian and Eurasian convergent plate margin. The thinner and denser oceanic part of indo-Australian plate goes underneath the thicker and less dense Eurasian continental plate. The process known as "subduction" in Geology. The crustal portion of the subducting Indo-Australian slab contains a significant amount of seawater, as well as water contained in hydrated minerals within the seafloor basalt. As the subducting slab descends to greater and greater depths, it progressively encounters greater temperatures and greater pressures, which cause the slab to release water into the mantle wedge underneath the Eurasian plate. Water has the effect of lowering the melting temperature of the mantle, thus causing it to melt. Because of the high pressure at the mantle, the magma dissolves plenty of volatiles (mostly water vapor and carbon dioxide). As magma beneath the current Mont Sinabung region rose up towards the surface and the pressure decreases, the volatiles came out of solution and formed bubbles in the magma, just like what happens when you open a shaken soda can. Moreover, because magmas produced by this mechanism are often more silica-rich than magmas of other tectonic settings, the bubbles in the magma cannot easily escape. They must explode their way out of the mag creating huge ash clouds. Behold the UTD GEONEWS Please! SOUNDBITE: (Indonesian) Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Indonesian minister of Energy and Mineral Resources: "The retail price for gasoline and diesel oil for small businesses, fisheries, transportation and public services inclusive of income tax per litre will be as follows - gasoline sale price per litre - 6000 Rupiah and diesel oil 5500 Rupiah." 13. Cutaway of media 14. Wide of news conference ending STORYLINE: Indonesia raised prices at the pump by nearly 30 percent late on Friday because of the surging cost of oil and gas on the global market, the government said, triggering small but rowdy protests. Dozens of students clashed with police in Jakarta following the announcement, while students elsewhere in the capital burned tyres and wood, according to local radio reports. There were no immediate reports of casualties or arrests. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono warned earlier this month that budget-busting subsidies, which have for years enabled motorists to fill up for roughly 1.80 US dollars a gallon, would have to be drastically slashed. Most people realise he had little choice, but that has not stopped thousands of students from taking to the streets in near-daily rallies this week, saying the poor would be hit the hardest. Speaking at a news conference on Friday, the Energy Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said gas prices were being boosted 33 percent to 2.40 US dollars a gallon. Diesel oil jumped 27 percent to 2.204 US dollars a gallon. And kerosene, used primarily for cooking, 25 percent to 1.00 US dollar. "The increase of global crude oil prices has resulted in the much bigger needs for certain fuel to be subsidised and this has burdened our state budget," he said. "That is why we need to adjust the fuel sale prices," he added. This is the third time Yudhoyono has raised fuel prices since he was elected president in 2004, defying protests and winning praise from international donors. To cushion the blow, the government has provided direct cash payments to the poor - a policy it said on Friday it would repeat.
