It’s a big job to manage land and water resources on a cattle operation, especially as these commodities become more limited and valuable. We'll show you how the Natural Resource Conservation Service helped a Virginia farmer develop a system to improve water quality in his community, while also increasing his beef production through better forages. West Virginia: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

01:58
West Virginia is a state with vast natural resources—timber, oil, gas, and, most famously, coal. Those non-renewable resources are quickly disappearing and, with them, the hope for West Virginia's future unless we create a Future Fund—a mineral trust fund—to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Since the 1880s, much of West Virginia's wealth has left the state in railcars and trucks. The local businesses that lined the main streets of Logan and Welch as late as the 1970s are gone, replaced by empty storefronts and broken dreams. More coal has been mined in McDowell County than any other county in West Virginia. Yet today, McDowell County is one of the ten poorest counties in the United States in terms of per capita income, education levels of its citizens and the quality of their health and well being. Today our state stands on the cusp of a natural gas boom as drilling has begun in the Marcellus Shale. Like coal in the last century, the gas industry is susceptible to booms and busts. This economic uncertainty can be addressed if we create a Future Fund by setting aside a portion of natural resource severance taxes. We can't go back and restore to McDowell or Logan counties a portion of the wealth that has left West Virginia. But we have the opportunity to do better for tomorrow's West Virginians by ensuring that future generations will continue to benefit from our state's natural wealth. West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Winter Den Check

Kevin Hess, of Nicholas County, holds onto a five-month old Black Bear cub. Wildlife biologist Larry Berry, with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, and other DNR officials, documented their vital statistics as part of a long-term bear study after tranquilizing the momma bear in the den. Two other separate yearlings from a different den, whose momma bear had died, were brought to this den to be raised. Since 2004, DNR officials have visited 52 winter dens and obtained data on 129 cubs. No bears were harmed in the filming of this video. (more)

Alpha Natural Resources - Running Right?

01:44
For the past decade Dickenson Russell Coal Company a subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources has been dewatering the abandoned McClure 1 mine to make room for coal waste slurry injection from the McClure 1 Coal Preparation plant. This occurs at the former air return shaft located beside Highway 83 just 6 miles east of Clintwood, Virginia. The water is discharged untreated into the McClure River which flows into the Russell Fork , then the Big Sandy, Ohio, and Mississippi. According to Eric Greear who works for the Department of Mines Minerals and Energy's Division of Mined Land Reclamation, only acidity and metal tests are performed on the water before it is discharged into the river. When asked about chemical testing, he said tests for chemicals were not required. The McClure #1 mine was in operation from 1978 to 1995. Has no one thought of the thousands of gallons of used hydraulic oil and gears oils that leaked from the machinery over the mine's lifespan? There are also many other chemicals that are left behind in the mining process including adhesives, strong cleaning agents, and anti-freeze to name a few. How can it be legal and considered "Running Right" to pump stagnant polluted mine water straight into our streams? \Alpha Natural Resources....Running Right?

Virginia Fly Fishing Wine Festival Promo

02:49
The Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival is the largest event of its kind in the country and attracts fly anglers from across the United States and the Mid-Atlantic in particular. Nowhere else can anglers learn about the quiet sport in such a beginner-friendly environment. Our unique event combines fine wine tasting, microbrewery beer, and everything you ever wanted to know about fly fishing but were afraid to ask. The mission of the Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival is to introduce as many people to the sport of fly fishing as possible, and to raise the level of awareness to the many pressing conservation issues facing Virginia. We do this believing that people, who are connected to the outdoors in their recreational activities, are more inclined to protect the natural resources they enjoy. #VAFlyFishingFestival www.vaflyfishingfestival.com Bring your family, relax, take a casting class, and pick up a new sport that the entire family can enjoy. The 19th Annual Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival will be held at The Meadow Event Park, just a few miles outside of Richmond, Virginia, on January 12-13, 2019. The festival — the largest event of its kind in the country, drawing fly anglers from as far away as New York and Georgia — appeals to anglers of all ages and stages. Festival attendees listen to lectures from various experts and practice hands-on skills at the two-day, family-friendly event. Several wineries from throughout the Old Dominion provide free wine tastings for those 21 and older. Last year’s festival enjoyed record turnout, and the event was flooded with children. Be sure to check out our expanded kayak demonstration area. Yes, you can try before you buy on our kayak/SUPB demo pond. Those who have enjoyed the outdoor festival environment for years can rest easy: Although the new facility will enable all vendors to be under roof, the events center is surrounded by extensive grounds suitable for outdoor classes and wine tastings. www.vaflyfishingfestival.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vaflyfishingfestival/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/virginia-fly-fishing-wine-festival/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vaflyfishingfestival/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/vaflyfishing
