Teaching French Through Stem: Webinar

52:26
Peggy Veal, French and Spanish teacher at STEM School & Academy (Colorado) will present a unit that she designed to meet her school's request to have her teach more STEM topics in the target language (in this case, French). Her unit addresses the process by which maple syrup is made. She will discuss the various strategies that she used to stay in the target language such as using pictures, cognates and drawing on her students' prior knowledge of the topic or of topics they have covered in science class before (photosynthesis for example). Peggy will explain how she customized the unit for various levels of French that she teaches. She will conclude with a brief summary of other STEM infused lessons she has designed as well connect to various AP themes (science et technology, the environment, etc). Finally, she will offer tips on how to convert existing units you might have already created and connect them to STEM topics that students already know. This webinar is sponsored by the graduate certificate in language teaching with technology at the University of Colorado Boulder. Visit http://www.colorado.edu/languagetechnologyprogram

In proverbs such as “On a toujours besoin d’un plus petit que soi.” Let’s look at how we use “on” in modern spoken French. The use of “on” is one of the fundamentals of modern spoken French. It’s also a very easy way to sound more French. It’s simple to understand and to add to your French, no matter your level. France - Teaching Handwriting

13:53
An educational philosophy encompassing all creative subjects backs up the teaching of handwriting in France. The French believe that giving children the ability to write will free their minds to perform creatively throughout their lives. So they teach handwriting as a subject in its own right. And they teach handwriting in a uniform way throughout primary schools, using traditional calligraphy to produce a distinctive, ornate hand. This programme visits a school in Lyon to see how students in Year 1 and Year 6 develop this ability.

Why do French People Sound French? | Improve Your Accent

04:36
In this video, I explain why French people sound French when speaking English. I break down the accent features with the help of current French president Emmanuel Macron! (10 points to anyone who realised that the 2nd /p/ in "passport" is fairly unaspirated in English) Thanks to those viewers who have pointed out that Emmanuel Macron has "un cheveu sur la langue" in French. However, this really doesn't matter. I teach many French students who hypercorrect and pronounce /s/ as /θ/ (and /z/ as /ð/) in English, and who don't have "un cheveu sur la langue". This video is simply a demonstration of potential pronunciation issues French people may have in English. Hypercorrection is a common issue and Macron illustrates this.
