Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources - YES

01:09
Environmental conservation and natural resources depend on protecting our planet. http://YourEarthSafe.com Sometimes the best thing you can do is nothing at all! At YES that's exactly what we do: we protect parcels of virgin wilderness by purchasing them on the free market and placing them in an independently managed international land trust safe from human exploitation. YES is a tool that allows you to become the beneficiary of virgin wilderness (generically referred to as "Land Unit") to help preserve them in their natural state thus allowing you to collaborate in the conservation of the planet. However small it might be, all contributions to environmental protection are always helpful. By joining YES you as an individual are contributing in a very real way to maintaining the global ecosystem, protecting the globall community and letting nature take its course.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization releases the Global Forest Resources Assessment report – known as FRA - every 5 years, using data collected by member countries on their forests and the impact they have on the environment. FAO has designed a new field method for reliable data collection which is now being tested in forests in Vietnam. The launch of this year’s Global Forest Resources Assessment Report – which covers the last 25 years of forest changes – will highlight the need for continued efforts to sustain forest management for the benefit of current and future generations. © FAO: http://www.fao.org Follow #UNFAO on social media! * Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/UNFAO * Google+ - https://plus.google.com/+UNFAO * Instagram - https://instagram.com/unfao/ * LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/fao * Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/faoknowledge

In this video Paul Andersen explains how the resources required for survival come from the Earth. The resources are not evenly distributed on the planet and neither are the humans. According to the NGSS we need to limit the use of nonrenewable resources (like oil and coal) through regulations and increase the use of renewable resources. A teaching progression K-12 is also included. Simple way to save our natural resources

01:38
A natural resource is anything that people can use which comes from nature. People do not make natural resources, but gather them from the earth. Examples of natural resources are air, water, wood, oil, wind energy, iron, and coal. Refined oil and hydro-electric energy are not natural resources because people make them. There are two sorts of natural resources: renewable resources and non-renewable resources. A renewable resource is one which can be used again and again. For example, soil, sunlight and water are renewable resources. However, in some circumstances, even water is not renewable easily. Wood is a renewable resource, but it takes time to renew and in some places people use the land for something else. Soil, if it blows away, is not easy to renew. A non-renewable resource is a resource that does not grow and come back, or a resource that would take a very long time to come back. For example, coal is a non-renewable resource. When we use coal, there is less coal afterward. One day, there will be no more of it to make goods. The non-renewable resource can be used directly (for example, burning oil to cook), or we can find a renewable resource to use (for example, using wind energy to make electricity to cook).

How do Humans interact with Natural Resources' Flows? | Phoebe Koundouri | TEDxAUEB

21:24
Central to Prof. Phoebe Koundouri’s research is the implementation of sustainable spatial and dynamic management of the interaction between humans and natural resources' flows, as the only non-self-destructive path of socio-economic development. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Professor Koundouri presented examples of her team's work during the last 20 years, focusing on sustainable management of inland waters, coastal and offshore waters, food-water-energy nexus, forest and biodiversity, etc. and implemented in more than 60 different countries around the globe. The output of this work has influenced policy and attracted mass media coverage all over the world. Professor Dr.Phoebe Koundouri has a PhD,MSc and MPhil on Economics from University of Cambridge(U.K).She’s a professor of Economics & Econometry focused on natural resources, energy and environment in AUEB,a visiting professor in LSE(London School of Economics),the Founder and Scientific Director of ΙCRE8: International Center for Research on the Environment and the Economy and owns the greek chair of United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network.Phoebe Koundouri is among the top 1,5% of female economists in the world, with lots of academic distinctions, published books and research publications. In the last 20 years, her research has been funded with more than 20 million euros, resulting in executed projects and in important contribution on policies’ formation all over the world. Natural resources occur naturally within environments that exist relatively undisturbed by humanity, in a natural form. A natural resource is often characterized by amounts of biodiversity and geodiversity existent in various ecosystems.Conservation of natural resources is now usually embraced in the broader conception of conserving the earth itself by protecting its capacity for self-renewal.

Its primary focus is upon maintaining the health of the natural world, its fisheries, habitats, and biological diversity. Secondary focus is on materials conservation and energy conservation, which are seen as important to protect the natural world. Those who follow the conservation ethic and, especially, those who advocate or work toward conservation goals are termed conservationists... Introduction To conserve habitat in terrestrial ecoregions and stop deforestation is a goal widely shared by many groups with a wide variety of motivations. To protect sea life from extinction due to overfishing is another commonly stated goal of conservation — ensuring that "some will be available for our children" to continue a way of life. The consumer conservation ethic is sometimes expressed by the four R's: " Rethink, Reduce, Recycle, Repair" This social ethic primarily relates to local purchasing, moral purchasing, the sustained, and efficient use of renewable resources, the moderation of destructive use of finite resources, and the prevention of harm to common resources such as air and water quality, the natural functions of a living earth, and cultural values in a built environment. The principal value underlying most expressions of the conservation ethic is that the natural world has intrinsic and intangible worth along with utilitarian value — a view carried forward by the scientific conservation movement and some of the older Romantic schools of ecology movement. More Utilitarian schools of conservation seek a proper valuation of local and global impacts of human activity upon nature in their effect upon human well being, now and to our posterity. How such values are assessed and exchanged among people determines the social, political, and personal restraints and imperatives by which conservation is practiced. This is a view common in the modern environmental movement. These movements have diverged but they have deep and common roots in the conservation movement. In the United States of America, the year 1864 saw the publication of two books which laid the foundation for Romantic and Utilitarian conservation traditions in America. The posthumous publication of Henry David Thoreau's Walden established the grandeur of unspoiled nature as a citadel to nourish the spirit of man. From George Perkins Marsh a very different book, Man and Nature, later subtitled "The Earth as Modified by Human Action", catalogued his observations of man exhausting and altering the land from which his sustenance derives. Practice Distinct trends exist regarding conservation development. While many countries' efforts to preserve species and their habitats have been government-led, those in the North Western Europe tended to arise out of the middle-class and aristocratic interest in natural history, expressed at the level of the individual and the national, regional or local learned society. Thus countries like Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, etc. had what we would today term NGOs — in the shape of the RSPB, National Trust and County Naturalists' Trusts (dating back to 1889, 1895 and 1912 respectively) Natuurmonumenten, Provincial conservation Trusts for each Dutch province, Vogelbescherming, etc. — a long time before there were National Parks and National Nature Reserves...
