What is LDAP?

04:59
LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. It is an application protocol used over an IP network to manage and access the distributed directory information service. This video gives you a high level overview of LDAP and some examples of software that utilize LDAP, such as Active Directory. For more help with technical or help desk related topics, visit us at: http://www.helpdesk-blog.com to learn more about Help Desk Premier, please visit us at: http://www.helpdesksoftware.biz What is LDAP? LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. It is an application protocol used over an IP network to manage and access the distributed directory information service. The primary purpose of a directory service is to provide a systematic set of records, usually organized in a hierarchical structure. It's similar to a telephone directory that contains a list of subscribers with their contact number and address. Overview of LDAP and Role of a Specialized Server In order to commence an LDAP session, a client needs to connect to the server known as the Directory System Agent, which is set by default to use TCP port 389. After the connection is established, the client and server exchange packets of data. Basic encoding rules are used to transfer information between the server and client. Structure of LDAP Although the structure of LDAP seems relatively complex, it is fairly simple to understand. The basic structure is as follows: • A set of attributes is contained in any entry. • Each attribute accommodates one or more values, and has a name. • Each entry in the directory is assigned a unique identifier that consists of a Relative Distinguished Name. The server is capable of holding a sub-tree and it's children, beginning from a particular entry. In addition, they may also hold brief references to other remote servers. A client has the option of contacting other servers too. Operations on LDAP There are a plethora of operations that can be performed on the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. Here are some of the most prominent ones: • Add -- This is used to insert a new entry into the directory-to-server database. If the name entered by a user already exists, the server fails to add a duplicate entry and instead shows an "entryAlreadyExists" message. • Bind -- On connection with the LDAP server, the default authentication state of the session is anonymous. There are basically two types of LDAP authentication methods - the simple authentication method and the SASL authentication method. • Delete -- As the name suggests, this operation is used to delete an entry from the directory. In order to do this, the LDAP client has to transmit a perfectly composed delete request to the server. • Compare and search -- Various parameters such as baseObject, filter, scope, attributes, typesOnly, derefAliasis, timeLimit and sizeLimit are used to perform both search and read operations, in addition to performing comparison functions. • Modify -- This operation is used by LDAP clients to make a request for making changes to the already existing database. The change to be made must be one of the following operations 1. Add (including a new value). 2. Delete (deleting an already existing value). 3. Replace (Overwriting an existing value with a new one). • Unbind -- This is the inverse of the bind operation. Unbind aborts any existing operations and terminates the connection, leaving no response in the end. Real-time applications of LDAP Email clients such as Microsoft Outlook employ some form of the LDAP database, although LDAP isn't used in its original form. Infospace and ICANN are the most popular search-related services built on the LDAP platform.

Introduction to Active Directory Infrastructure in Windows Server 2012

38:56
Info Level: Intermediate Presenter: Eli the Computer Guy Date Created: February 25, 2013 Length of Class: 38:56 Tracks Windows Server 2012 Prerequisites Introduction to Windows Server 2012 Purpose of Class This class teaches students the basic concepts in building out Active Directory Infrastructure for Windows Server 2012. Class Notes DC's or Domain Controllers are the server that control the Active Directory Service Domains are made up of Domain Controllers and Member PC's and Servers. There can be multiple Domain Controllers in a Domain for fault Tolerance and Load Balancing. DC's keep data synchronized through replication. The schedule for replication is called the "replication strategy". DC's can be grouped into Sites. Sites are comprised of Domain Controllers located at the same geographic location. Sites are used to reduce bandwidth consumption used due to Replication. DC's are normally set to be Read/ Write. For security purposes you can make DC's Read only. Read Only DC's are used at Remote Offices to lessen the danger of Hacking. Sites are connected through Site Links Sites can Replicate Through Site Link Bridges. Site Link Bridges are kind of like routers for replication. Global Catalog Servers store searchable Indexes of the Active Directory database. There should be at least one Global catalog server at each site. It is best to use Microsoft's built in DNS Server on a Windows Server 2012 network. You can use a Unix DNS Server, but... WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service) was Microsoft's attempt to compete with DNS. You will rarely ever see it, but if you have very old legacy systems you may need to create a WINS server. Using Microsoft's DHCP Server is usually the best bet on a Windows Domain. Using Windows DNS and DHCP allow for multiple servers for fault tolerance and increased security.

How to Configure Active Directory Lightweight Directory Access Protocol In server2012R2 Part 1

04:50
AD LDS is a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory service that provides flexible support for directory-enabled applications, without the dependencies that are required for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). AD LDS provides much of the same functionality as AD DS, but it does not require the deployment of domains or domain controllers. You can run multiple instances of AD LDS concurrently on a single computer, with an independently managed schema for each AD LDS instance. AD DS provides directory services for both the Microsoft® Windows Server server operating system and for directory-enabled applications. For the server operating system, AD DS stores critical information about the network infrastructure, users and groups, network services, and so on. In this role, AD DS must adhere to a single schema throughout an entire forest. The AD LDS server role, on the other hand, provides directory services specifically for directory-enabled applications. AD LDS does not require or rely on Active Directory domains or forests. However, in environments where AD DS exists, AD LDS can use AD DS for the authentication of Windows security principals.

Linux openLDAP AddressBook

05:08
More videos like this on http://www.theurbanpenguin.com : Yes, free software can provide a lot. We now look at setting openLDAP as being the Address Book for Mozilla Thunderbird. Having a centralized address book is essential for colalborative tools such as email and it is easily setup with openLDAP. Sure it is not Exchange or Groupwise but does not come with the price tag either. A big consideration in these times. Using openSUSE 11.2 as the ldap server and Thunderbird on Windows XP the demo is worth a view.

MCITP 70-640: Global Catalog Server

13:40
Check out http://YouTube.com/ITFreeTraining or http://itfreetraining.com for more of our always free training videos. Global Catalog Servers contain a partial replica for every object in Active Directory. A Global Catalog Server is used to find objects in any domain in the forest. Any Domain Controller can be made into a Global Catalog Server. This video looks at how to remove or make a Domain Controller into a Global Catalog Server and also the reasons why and where you should put Global Catalog Servers. Global Catalog Servers are used to find objects in any domain in the forest but it should be remembered that this does not give the user access to that object. Unless the user has the correct permissions they will not be able to access resources in other domains. Global Catalog Servers also contain information about groups that span across domains and services that work at the forest level. How to change a Domain Controller to a Global Catalog Server 04:18 Using the admin tool Active Directory Users and Computers to navigate to the computer account for your Domain Controller. By default this will be located in the Domain Controllers OU. Open the properties for the Domain Controller and select the button NTDS settings. Deselect or select the tickbox Global Catalog. Windows will do the rest. Reasons to deploy Global Catalog Servers Reason 1 Domain Controllers generate a security token for a user when they first login. If the user is in a group that spans multi--domains, that Domain Controller will need to contact a Global Catalog to get information about that group. Reason 2 If a user logs in using a Universal Principal Name (UPN), that is, they log in using a user name in the form of [email protected], a Domain Controller will need to access a Global Catalog Server before the log in is completed. Reason 3 Global Catalog Servers work as an index to the forest. If you perform any searches on the forest you will need to contact a Global Catalog Server. Reason 4 Microsoft recommends that any network that is separated by a Wide Area Network have a Global Catalog Server deployed at that location. This will ensure that users can log on if the Wide Area Network is down. In order for a computer to contact a Global Catalog Server, ports 389 (LDAP) and 3267 (Global Catalog) need to be opened. If these ports are not open then the user will not be able to use the remote Global Catalog Server. Reason 5 Some software requires a Global Catalog Server in order to run. Exchange is a big user of the Global Catalog Server. If you have a decent amount of Exchange users on your network, you should consider deploying a Global Catalog Server close to these users. Reasons not to deploy a Global Catalog Server Global Catalog Servers put more load on the server in the form of searches and lookups from the client. Global Catalogs need to keep their index up to date. This requires more network bandwidth. In order to store the Global Catalog Server, you are required to have additional hard disk space on your server.
