What is short selling? Join our Fall Trading Contest and win $500 when you practice trading: https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com/register?utm_source=Youtube&utm_medium=VideoLink&utm_campaign=FallContest Most people think of investing as buying a stock (or other asset) and making money when its price goes up - but it’s also possible to make a profit when a stock price goes down. This process is called short selling (or shorting). Short selling isn’t all peaches and cream. There are opportunities for high returns, but as usual, these come with high risks. The big risk here is that there is no limit to your losses. When you buy a stock, you can only lose the amount that you invested. But when you short, your losses are infinite because there is theoretically no end to how high a stock’s price can rise. Short selling isn’t for everyone. It requires a lot of time and research, and a desire for high risks and high returns. Short selling is primarily used for speculator looking to make a profit when the market goes down or investing looking to hedge their position. What is "Beta" [Stock Market Terms] + How to Use it for Trading Decisions

07:27
What is "Beta" [Stock Market Terms] + How to Use it for Trading Decisions ★ SUMMARY ★ In this week's episode what I'd like to do with you share with you What is Beta and How Can You Use Beta on the Stock Market Tables to make trading decisions or investing decisions for your personal portfolio. Knowing what Beta is First off before we even get into what is Beta more important question is why would you want to know this why? Why would you want to know what it's all about? Well the thing is, what beta really tells you, is it tells you the volatility of a certain stock or security. How big of those movement, how big not a direction but that how large those movements can be for a stock or security relative to a neutral level. What does all this mean in layman's terms or in simple terms? Applying Beta to your stock picks It means that if you're looking for a stable company, if you’re for looking for a stock that does not whipsaw around a lot, if you're looking for a stock that moves in a nice line fashion then you want a smaller beta. If you want a stock that moves around a lot quicker and has a higher potential to make you more money or has a higher potential to go to the upside quicker or go to the downside quicker, typically great for day trading as well, then you want a higher beta. An in-depth understanding of Beta in the stock market Let's look at beta in more in-depth. Basically, the stock market itself, the market itself has a beta of 1 so if we have the market as a beta of 1, this is how it moves. So let's just pretend that this angle in this volatility is one. Stocks that have a higher volatility will have a higher beta so they may have a beta of something like let's just say one point three and if you have a beta of 1.3, this means typically your 30% more volatile than the market. So that volatility maybe something more like this so that stock has a greater volatility as it's going up or down. Now for looking for lower betas, companies like Microsoft or proctor and Gamble, if you're looking for a beta of let's say 0.8, this would be 0.8%, that volatility might be something like this, it might be very small and it moves very slow. It very slow to the upside or the downside, so you’re little bit more stable and that's why when things are in a panic they sell off very big, people jump to the lower beta stocks, they jump to the ones that have more stability. On the other hand when things are going great they’ll jump into the higher beta names because that is what they want, they want a huge run to the upside they want the fastest stocks that are moving the quickest in the shortest amount of time. What is the stock market? Win $500 and practice stock trading in our Fall Contest today! https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com/register?utm_source=Youtube&utm_medium=VideoLink&utm_campaign=FallContest The stock market exists so that companies can raise money without incurring any debt (such is the case of a loan). They issue shares of their company to the public in what is known as an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Investors buy and sell these shares (or stocks) to one another on the stock exchange, thus making stock prices move up and down. If there are more people buying a stock than people selling it, the price goes up with the demand. If more people are selling than there are people buying a stock, that’s a sign that the company is unfavorable to own and the stock price drops. A stock exchange is where investors trade their shares of companies to one another. That’s why stock prices are constantly changing. Stock exchanges bring all these investors together, so that trades happen in a central and regulated place. There are hundreds of stock exchanges all over the world. In the U.S., the top stock exchanges are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the NASDAQ, and the American Stock Exchange (AMEX). Each of these exchanges have different companies trading on them. For example, NASDAQ is known for technological companies. Most of the tech stocks out there trade on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Business English Vocabulary: The Stock Market

13:38
http://www.engvid.com Learn business English vocabulary: Whether you are investing in a bull or a bear market, you should know the common terms and expressions that stock brokers and mutual fund managers will use to discuss your options. In this lesson, we will go over some of the more common terms you will need to familiarize yourself with if you want to become rich. Playing the stock market is a risky business, so be prepared! http://www.engvid.com/business-english-vocabulary-stock-market/ TRANSCRIPT Hi again. I'm Adam. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. Today we're going to look at some business English, with an introduction to investing. Now, what is investing? Investing is putting your money someplace with the hope that more money will come back to you later. Okay? So it's making money over time. Many ways to do it, but today we're going to look more specifically at the stock market. Now, before we begin to look at the stock market, we need to know all the different words that you will find in the stock market discussion. Of course, we have to look at "stocks". So: "stocks" and "shares". Now, many people get confused: what is a stock? What is a share? Realistically, these are basically the same thing, but subtle differences between the two. So, when a company decides that it wants to make money, so it can expand its business, it wants to raise capital. "Capital", it's a big word, there's lots of meanings to it. We're going to look at that a different time. But for our case, "capital" means money. They want to make money, they want to raise capital so they can grow their business. So what they do is they sell stock. Stock is a partial ownership of the company. So when you buy stock, you get a piece of paper, you get a certificate that says that you own part of this company. And because you own part of the company, you have certain rights. You can make... You can vote for changes, you can vote for things that the company should do. Now, what is a share? A share is an equal piece of the stock. So, for example, a company sells $100 worth of stock. That's the full amount of the ownership that the company makes available to the public. Now, this stock, this total amount, they divide into 100 shares. Okay? So you buy as many shares as you want of this stock. So because you have 100 shares, the full stock is $100. Each share is, of course, $1. You buy 10 shares, that mean... That means you're buying 10% of the available stock. You're buying $10 worth of shares. Now, you own stock, you own shares in the company. In that case, it's the same thing. Now, when you talk about stocks, you can say: "I own stocks." So let's go to this word quickly: "portfolio". Your portfolio is the collection of your investments. You may have stocks, you may have mutual funds, you may have bonds, you may have commodities, you may have real estate. You may have all kinds of different investments. If part of your portfolio is stocks, you say: "I have some stocks." It means I can have five company's stocks. But when you say: "I have shares", then you have shares of a company. Okay? I have stocks in 10 different companies. I have shares... I have 10% or I have 100 shares in this company, I have 50 shares in that company, I have 2,000 shares in that company. But all together, you have stock. Okay? So it's a total amount of the companies that you own. Now, if you want to buy stocks or trade stocks, if you want to buy and sell your shares, you can contact a "stockbroker". Okay? A broker is somebody who deals with trades; buys, sells stocks on the stock market. These days, you can just go online and find a "brokerage" which is a website or a company that lets you buy and sell your own stocks and shares. Okay. Next: we have "IPO", this is "Initial Public Offering". Sorry I'm a little bit off line, here. When a company decides: "Okay, we need to make more money. We need to raise capital. We need to sell some stock of our company." So the first time that they sell this stock, there's a big event, you know, like it's a big promotion, they have to market it, they have to tell the public: "Look, we're going to sell stock. Get ready." This is the initial public offering. The first time that they sell stock. We actually don't say: "Sell". They don't sell stock; they issue stock. And then the stock brokerage or the stockbrokers, they buy and sell the stock. Next: "ROI". This is a very important thing to consider. "Return On Investment". Before you buy anything, before you invest your money in anything, you always have to consider your ROI. How much money do you hope to get back? How much money do you think you will get back? Because at the end of the day, a stock market is a gamble. There's high-risk and there's low-risk companies. Your return on investment, obviously, you're hoping to make money. You hope to get a positive yield.
30. What is Stock Volume

Although volume won't help intelligent investors learn the intrinsic value of a company, it can be used as a tool to help predict market behavior. Many times investors can be fooled into believing that the market price of a stock is determined by all the shareholders. This idea is false. When we look at the volume of a company on an given day, we can quickly get a sense of how many traders are actually determine the price of a stock when we compare this number to the shares outstanding. This ratio, volume/shares outstanding, provides a good idea how many traders are moving away from the company and how many are coming into the company. When the company trades at a very low volume, we can generally say that the shareholder agree with the market price. Likewise, if the volume is very high, we can generally say that shareholders disagree with the market price. In the video, we demonstrated this principal with Wells Fargo (WFC). When we looked at the historical market price for WFC, we learned that on the day where the volume was the highest in ten years, the market price was at an all time low. This idea of shareholders disagreeing with the market price when volume is relatively high is an important point that stock traders can use to their advantage. Always remember, volume can mean that the stock is over priced or underpriced. The peak or valley is for you to discern.

Basics of the Bid, the Ask, and the Bid-Ask Spread in Stock Trading

02:43
If you want to purchase shares right away, you are going to have to pay the asking price. Similarly, if you want to sell shares right away, you have to pay the bidding price. Bid: -What people are looking to get the order at -If you want to purchase 100 shares of Nike, you might bid $50.90, but the ask is $50.98 -In order to get that order, you need to pay $50.98 Ask -What people are looking to get for the stock Bid-Ask Spread -It is the difference between the bid and the ask -What the market makers have to make -i.e. $50.98-$50.90 = $0.08 -$0.08 is what the market makers get paid to execute that order -As soon as you purchase the stock you lose $0.08 per share -You can't buy and sell immediately because it will be costly -You need to take the bid-ask spread into account when trading ★ SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE: ★ http://bit.ly/addtradersfly ★ ABOUT TRADERSFLY ★ TradersFly is a place where I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience about the stock market, trading, and investing. We are looking for stocks that we expect will move in a predictable direction. We want to take a position with a predefined stop level and profit target. Sounds easy right? In a lot of ways it is. But there are literally thousands of different strategies for trading the market. Every trader has a unique approach to trading. Our goal is to teach you our strategies. I have developed a series of profitable trading strategies for beginners. Our Trading Courses focus on the most fundamental aspects of a successful trade. // Chart Patterns After you understand risk management and proper stock selection, we teach you how to find stock patterns on charts. These patterns are how we base our risk and reward. We look for chart patterns that have well defined areas of support and resistance. We will use previous support levels as our stop price, or our risk, and we look at previous resistance areas as our initial profit target, or our reward. If the profit vs loss ratio is 2:1 we will take the trade. I teach both day trading strategies and swing trading strategies. For day trading we focus primarily on 5min charts while swing traders focus more on daily charts. The patterns in general are the same. I teach traders how to find patterns in real-time including Bull Flags, Bear Flags, Flat Tops, Flat Bottoms, and Rubber Band Reversal Setups. // Trading Strategies Learning risk management, proper stock selection, and chart patterns is important, but those alone don’t create a trading strategy. A trading strategy requires details on the time of day you take these trades, what type of stocks you like to trade, what percentage to success you expect. All our students are required to papertrade and prove to me that they can trade on a percentage of success that is high enough to justify real trading. If you can’t make money in a demo account, you have no business trading a real account. We have saved students hundreds of thousands of dollars by encouraging paper trading while they are learning. The market will be here for a long time to come. The important thing for you right now is to build up the skills to trade the market successfully. You will learn that once you possess the skills to consistently make $20.00/day all it takes to make $200 is larger share size. Then all it takes to make $2000 is again, larger share size. The hardest part is being consistently green just $20/day. So that is our initial target for all of our students. Profitable trading 4/5 days per week for at least 3 months. Understanding Long and Short Terms in Stock Market Trading

03:58
These terms are more efficient than terms like "buy" and "sell" because they tell your position--your mindset on a particular stock or on the industry. Long: -Positive on the market -You can also be "long" on a particular stock: If you are long Nike, you're expecting it to go up Short: -Negative on the market -You can also be "short" on a particular stock: If you are short Nike, you're expecting it to go down -Selling with the intention to buy the shares back at a lower price Benefits of using "Long"/"Short" vs. "Buy"/"Sell": -If you have 1,000 shares of Nike and you tell someone you sold 500 shares, they could assume you think Nike is going to go down even though you are still positive 500 shares. -If you think a certain stock will go down and you decide to sell all 1,000 shares and later purchase 300 shares, and you tell someone that you bought the 300 shares, it is not clear that you are still negative 700 shares. They may not understand that you think Nike will go down. -"Long" and "short" remove the ambiguity associated with the terms "buy" and "sell." ★ SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE: ★ http://bit.ly/addtradersfly ★ ABOUT TRADERSFLY ★ TradersFly is a place where I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience about the stock market, trading, and investing. 04 - What is leverage? - easyMarkets - Education

03:25
For more info visit: Easy Forex - http://www.easy-forex.com/gtw/6255274.aspx When most people think about investing they think that they need large amounts of initial capital in order to start. While this may be the case for stocks, bonds and other investments, forex is much more accessible due to the use of leverage. So how does leverage affect your trading? To explain, think of buying a home. You may want to buy a property that is worth one hundred thousand dollars, so you go to a bank to take out a loan or mortgage. The bank requests that you supply twenty percent of the property as a down payment on your loan. So, for twenty thousand dollars, you are now able to enter into ownership of a one hundred thousand dollar home. This is an illustration of leverage in real estate. You have bought the home at a leverage of five to one, since twenty thousand dollars is one fifth of one hundred thousand dollars. One year later the property market has appreciated by fifty percent and you decide to sell the property for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, making a fifty thousand dollar profit. If you had not taken out a bank loan and had used only your twenty thousand dollars to buy a small studio which cost that amount, your total profit after a fifty percent property price increase would have been only ten thousand dollars. Your five to one leverage has allowed you to earn five times more than you would have if you had traded without leverage. Let's see how we can apply leverage to a forex deal. You currently have one thousand Euros to invest and you decide to buy one hundred thousand EUR worth of EUR/USD, at a rate of one point thirty-one thirty. Since one thousand is one hundredth of one hundred thousand, you are using a leverage of one hundred to one. The EUR/USD rate then moves up to one point thirty-one forty and you decide to close your deal, making a ten pip profit. Using the pip formula from the 'What is a pip video,' you can calculate that your total profit is one hundred dollars. If you had not traded with leverage you would have only made a one dollar profit. In fact, depending on your account type and risk preference, you can trade much smaller or larger deal sizes, and use different levels of leverage. It is important that you keep in mind that higher leverage can increase your potential profits, but it can also lead to bigger potential losses. Due to this risk, we encourage traders to plan their trades well by making sure they employ a risk management strategy and keep learning about the market. To improve your trading skills further, you can visit the Learn section of our website where you can explore the rest of our educational tools such as our eBook, and sign up for our online webinars

A “bull” market is simply the opposite of that, with investors being aggressive and positive, with stock prices rising as a result of this optimism. This “bull” and “bear” terminology first popped up in the 18th century in England. Farmers use various tools to control the many risks in agriculture. Watching the weather influences when they plant or harvest. Buying crop insurance and selecting farm bill safety net programs helps protect them from crop devastation. But they can also manage some of the threat posed by volatile market prices by participating in the futures market. Farmers can get a feel for how that works if they play Commodity Classic, an online teaching tool that uses fictitious bushels of grain in a fake futures market. But here at Harvest Public Media, we wanted to better understand how the futures market helps both producers and users of a major commodity, such as corn. And how the benefits trickle down to regular food consumers. Here’s what we learned.

Stock Market Index | by Wall Street Survivor

01:45
What is a stock market index? Learn more at: https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com An index, like the DOW, the S&P500 or the NASDAQ, is a sample of stocks that provide insight into the broader market. When someone says "the market is up 10 points today", they are referring to an index. By measuring the compilation of similar stocks instead of just one or two stocks, a stock index provides information about that particular market or segment. One of the most talked about and popular indexes is The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) which consists of 30 of the biggest companies in the U.S. Stock indices are typically related by some commonality: for example, the Dow Jones Wilshire 5000 is an index that measures or tracks almost every publicly traded stock in the United States. The Morgan Stanley Biotech Index is a small index that follows the biotechnology market. Each stock index has a specific focus that can provide highly specific or very generalized information. 03 - What is a pip? - easyMarkets - Education

04:42
For more info visit: Easy Forex - http://www.easy-forex.com/gtw/6255274.aspx In order to trade successfully you need to understand what a pip is and how to calculate its value. A pip stands for "percentage in point" and is the smallest price change that a given exchange rate can make An increase or decrease in pips represents a profit or a loss in your forex trade. Let me explain further! When currencies are quoted, they are mainly quoted to the fourth decimal place (this is also true for silver and heating oil). Exceptions are pairs that include the Japanese yen (as well as commodities such as gold, oil, brent and gas), which are quoted to two decimal places. When we look at the EUR/USD pair and see it move from 1.3130 to 1.3131 it has moved 1 pip (because the fourth decimal point has increased by 1). A one pip move for the USD/JPY we can see as 77.60 to 77.61 (because the second decimal point has increased by 1). In major pairs quoted against the USD, we calculate the value of a pip as follows: The EUR/USD has an exchange rate of 1.3130. If 1 pip equals 0.0001, we divide 0.0001 by 1.3130 which gives us a pip value of €0.0000761. Let's turn this into a forex deal to see what the pip would represent in either a profit or loss. Deal 1: Sell €100,000 worth of EUR/USD, at 1.3130. Pip value in euro terms is 0.0000761 x 100,000 = €7.61 (or exactly $10!). If the deal is closed at 1.3120, with a 10 pip profit, the total profit would be €76.10, or $100. Deal 2: Buy $50,000 worth of USD/JPY, at 77.60. Pip value in dollar terms is 0.01/77.60 x 50,000 = $6.44 (or exactly ¥500!). If the deal is closed at 77.50, with a 10 pip loss, the total loss would be $64.43, or ¥5,000. It is our commitment to provide our traders with access to the best fixed spreads and execution methods, and this is why you may at times notice additional smaller numbers at the end of a currency rate. These numbers are referred to as "Fractional pips" and are a new pricing feature which lets you see more price action detail and helps you make more informed trading decisions. A fractional pip is a tenth of a pip and the addition of this feature to your account allows you to take advantage of smaller price increments and moves in the market. Instead of quoting prices to two or four decimals, with fractional pips we quote an extra digit. For example, normally EURUSD ask would be quoted as 1.3251, while with fractional pips we quote 1.32508, with the last smaller digit representing the fractional pip. Earlier we mentioned deals of 100,000 euros and 50,000 dollars which may have seemed quite large, especially if you are new to trading, but this is where an important factor comes in - the use of leverage. Leverage basically means you can trade larger amounts than your initial investment. View our video "What is leverage?" to find out how it is used in the forex market. What does it mean to go short on a stock?

08:39
What does it mean to go short on a stock? ★ SUMMARY ★ Long position With a long position, you buy a stock at a certain price and sell it at a higher price as the stock appreciates in value. The profit that you make is the difference between your buy price and the price that you sell it at. Short position With the short position what happens is that you’re really borrowing shares from your broker, you’re selling the shares first in the open market, then you buy those shares at a lower price and profiting from the difference there. How do you make money by shorting? How is the money made on the short side? In a real world situation, let’s say you sell a camera or you list it on eBay for $125, it got sold, you got paid, now you need to deliver that camera, so that way you are at a neutral status, so you buy it from a friend for $95 because you knew that camera was available for cheap, and you made $30 in profit after you go ahead and ship that camera out.
