Characteristics of a Good Business Leader

02:50
Marshall Goldsmith discusses the five qualities of a good business leader for the future. Goldsmith:  Depends on the job. I would say a good leader is a person who produces results and develops people in the level where they're expected to lead and a good leader at one position may or may not be a good leader at another position. Companies change. Expectations change. People change. You can't make an assumption that great leader X, first-line supervisor, is going to be a great CEO and you can't make the assumption that a great CEO in one company is necessarily going to be a great CEO in another company. It doesn't always work. Does the person fit that situation?  And again I mentioned that study. I mentioned five qualities for the future. There--  We had ten other qualities that came up on our research and these are all things that you'd expect like integrity, ability to communicate a vision, customer satisfaction, etc., etc. There's one quality though I think that we don't look at enough in terms of the importance for leading people. That is does this person love leading people?  The best leaders I've met who lead people are people who love leading people. They just love it. It's not a chore for them. They don't hate it. They come to work every day. They're motivated. They're enthusiastic. They love leading people. Well, if you love leading people, then you're going to take it serious. You're probably going to study it. You're going to try to get better. You care. And if you don't love leading people, you're often just faking it and unfortunately some people are excellent technicians and the only way they can get promoted is to be in to management. They get in to management. They really don't care for leading people at all but they do it anyway. The problem is they don't have their heart in it. So I think the key to success in most fields:  If you have your heart in it. If you do, you probably do okay and if you don't you can't. Question: Can a successful business leader lack integrity? Goldsmith:  Depends how you define leader. Would you want to work with someone who didn't have integrity?  I doubt it. If you ask people, "Think of the worst leader you ever had," a lot of times they mention integrity. Think of the best leader you ever had. I never read the best leader ever had lacked integrity so I never read that one so far so I would think that's a basic bottom line characteristic of a great leader. People have to trust you and if they don't have to trust you it's highly unlikely you're going to be a great leader, and by the way different people define integrity in different ways. So you could take a leader who's seen as not a good human being by some people. Relative to their own values they might have high integrity so it's- you have to be careful about integrity. How much of this is an absolute statement and how much of this is a statement relative to the cultural values of the person you're talking to?

Great leadership starts with self-leadership | Lars Sudmann | TEDxUCLouvain

12:47
At TEDxUtopia, the question was asked: What would leadership in Utopia look like? To start with, imagine the best leader you have ever worked with. How did he or she get to become this type of leader? Leadership lecturer and former corporate executive Lars Sudmann argues that it's likely that they learned to overcome the "leadership formula of doom" and then developed themselves as a leader. In this funny and invigorating talk Lars walks us through the personal journeys of great leaders, shows lessons from the golden age of leadership and shares 3 strategies on self-leadership to develop yourself into a "Utopia leader”. Lars Sudmann is a leadership advisor and award-winning lecturer. He studies and researches what makes the most advanced organizations and leaders successful – and then he shares that knowledge with the world. He has had a business career of more than 10 years in management and finance with Procter & Gamble, e.g. as the Chief Financial Officer of Belgium, and he has lived and worked in Europe and Asia. Trends/Tendance, the Belgian Business Magazine, and the BBC have called on his expertise. Additionally, he is currently a university lecturer in Aachen and Braunschweig (both Germany). What does leadership in Utopia look like? How does leadership work in a future ultra-networked world? And is there one leadership ideal that we can all strive towards, and if yes, what is holding us back from achieving it? In this highly engaging talk, leadership expert Lars Sudmann will dive into the past, present and future of excellent leadership. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Keys to Success from Jack Ma | Self-Made Billionaire and CEO of Alibaba

14:58
It takes a rare person to accumulate a total net worth over $20 billion through a devoted work ethic while maintaining a sense of perspective. Jack Ma is one of those people. The founder and CEO of Alibaba, one of the world’s leading e-commerce web portals, is one of the world’s richest men, but he has not let success cloud his vision for the future or his acknowledgement of where he came from. Jack Ma’s keys to success are true and inspiring for everyone from aspiring billionaires to owners of the smallest businesses. 1. He Values Attitude When Jack Ma talks about the biggest mistake he ever made he describes how when he founded Alibaba he told his team that the highest level they could achieve would be that of managers, and that executives should be hired from the outside. Ma has learned his lesson and now stresses the importance of attitude and passion over theoretical skills. 2. He Unites People under a Single Goal Ma understands that no matter how hard you try you will never be able to convince every single employee, business partner, and potential investor to trust you or believe what you say. Accepting that and changing your approach is another key to his massive success. Rather than uniting his company under the vision of one person, he unites them under a common goal. The vision is more important than the leader. 3. He has Foresight Jack Ma believes that a good leader should have foresight. He should try to stay one step ahead of the competition and anticipate how decisions will play out ahead of other people. Taking time to develop creative thinking skills and following informed intuition is a hallmark of any great business leader. 4. He Hires People with Superior Skills When asked what separates a leader from an employee Ma has gone on record saying “Your employee should have superior technical skills than you. If he doesn’t, it means you have hired the wrong person.” Focusing on the skills of employees and hiring people with the know how to carry out your vision is an important pillar of any great company. 5. He is Tenacious In addition to foresight Ma says leaders should be tenacious and have a clear vision. Knowing what you want to achieve and having the drive to chase it down will not only put you on the path to success, it will inspire those around you to work hard for that common goal. Taking pride in your work and not taking no for an answer are keys to Ma’s business philosophy. 6. He Defines Failure as Giving Up According to Ma, “giving up is the greatest failure.” If you go out, try your best and fail to achieve your goal but see it through to the end you are a success. Like all great leaders, Ma recognizes that a person is able to learn the most from obstacles and hardships. They key to success is persevering and learning from your mistakes. 7. He Loves Life “I always tell myself that we are born here not to work, but to enjoy life. We are here to make things better for one another, and not to work. If you are spending your whole life working, you will certainly regret it.” This sentiment lies at the heart of Jack Ma’s lifestyle. Life is for experiencing the world and helping out other people. If money is your goal, you have to change your mindset. 8. He Doesn’t Make Enemies One the most unique aspects of Jack Ma’s business philosophy is the idea of friendly competition. Ma does not see his competitors as his enemies, rather they are friends whom he can learn from and who challenge him to achieve his full potential. It is clear that Jack Ma’s philosophy is built for success in a rapidly developing world. We can all learn a thing or two from this self-made billionaire. Successful Business Leadership and Management in the Digital Age

01:58
A successful leader must be a global leader, says Marshall Goldsmith. Question: What are the biggest challenges business leaders face today? Goldsmith:  Well, I was interviewed in the Harvard Business Review and asked a question. What is the number one problem of the people you coach?  And the answer is winning too much. What's that mean?  If it's important, we want to. When?  Meaningful and we want to. When?  Critical, we want to. When?  Trivial, we want to. When?  Not worth it, we want to. Win anyway. We like winning. I had a case study that I give with my clients and 75% fail but when I say fail they fail themselves. The case study goes like this. You want to go to dinner at restaurant X. Your husband, wife, partner, friend or significant other wants to go to dinner at restaurant Y. You have a heated argument. You go to restaurant Y, so it's not your choice. The food tastes awful. The service is terrible. Option A, critique the food. Point out your partner was wrong. This mistake could have been avoided had only they listened to me, me, me. Option B, shut up, eat the stupid food, try to enjoy it and have a nice evening. What would I do?  What should I do?  Seventy-five percent of my clients--  What would I do?  Critique the food. What should I do?  Shut up. It's incredibly difficult for smart, successful people not to constantly go through life and win. The second major factor is--  It's related to the first, called adding too much value. I'm young, smart, enthusiastic. I report to you. I come to you with an idea. You think it's a great idea but in saying great idea our natural tendency is to say, "That is a nice idea. Why don't you add this to it?"  Well, the problem is the quality of the idea may go up 5%. My commitment to its execution may now go down 50%. It's no longer my idea, incredibly difficult for smart, successful people not to constantly go through life adding value. One of my clients is a CEO of a large pharmaceutical company. I asked him, "What did you learn about leadership as a CEO?"  He said, "I learned a very hard lesson. As a CEO, my suggestions become orders."  He said, "If they're smart they're orders. If they're stupid they're orders. If I want them to be orders, they are orders. If I do not want them to be orders, they're orders anyway."  The higher you move up in to leadership, the more we need to realize our suggestions become orders and I asked him, "What did you learn from me when I was your coach that helped you the most?"  He said, "You taught me one lesson that helped me be a better executive and be a happier person."  And I said, "What is it?"  He said, "Before I speak, stop and breathe, ah, and ask myself one question. Is it worth it?"  And he said, "As CEO of this company, 50% of the time I have the discipline to stop and breathe and ask is it worth it?  What do I decide?  Am I right?  Maybe. Is it worth it?  No."

Business Leadership: To be a successful leader, you also need to be brave

02:11
Sindi Zilwa, co-founder of the Nkonki firm of chartered accountants, is eminently qualified to talk about bravery. As South Africa’s youngest woman to win Bwasa’s Business Woman of the Year award in 1998 and the third black woman to win the title, she knows all about chartering unknown territories, shattering stereotypes and starting at the bottom of a business ladder with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Zilwa and her brother Mzi Nkonki started Nkonki in Jan 1993 - before the democratic SA - so the number of unknowns were numerous, including where and how to find funders and access to intellectual capital. “...I was the second black chartered accountant to qualify, so there were very few other people who could actually assist us to move forward with the business.” Today she is the CEO of Nkonki which, 23 years after its humble inception, is an organisation with more than 400 people, 40 partners and directors, and an international affiliation with Kreston International. Exactly how has her belief system placed her at the helm of a company that is the only majority female-owned auditing firm in South Africa to be accredited by the JSE to audit listed companies - as well being qualified to audit companies on the New York Stock Exchange? In this (2’11”) extract from a full-length, in-depth video interview, Zilwa speaks frankly about her business leadership challenges and lessons. Watch the full-length interview here: http://bit.ly/2fAQtMC In partnership with FNB, Moneyweb presents this bespoke leadership video series with top business people. Business Leadership: What successful entrepreneurs have in common

02:45
The entrepreneurial career of Marc Wainer, executive chair of Redefine Properties (which has a current market capitalisation of around R58 billion) started with him having to work in his parents’ grocery store with his brother - and hating every minute of it. His job in the store was to deal with the sales reps: placing orders and figuring out whether to buy ten cases of tea for a 10% discount, based on how long it would take to sell the tea. However, despite detesting the work, he admits that this is where he started learning the ropes of business in general. No doubt it’s also where his tough, fast-and-smart negotiating skills started to develop. According to Wainer, this is a common theme amongst entrepreneurs worldwide, who worked or helped in their parents’ businesses. He references internationally-successful business icons such as the fashion retail tycoon Sir Philip Green, who started out working in his parents’ garage. Wainer firmly believes that these circumstances somehow gave the budding entrepreneurs a basic understanding of business and a hunger to achieve more. In this quick insight, extracted from a full-length video interview, Wainer shares the valuable lessons he learnt about entrepreneurialism, and how it has informed many of his strategic decisions. Watch the full length video here: http://bit.ly/2cN5Z6g In partnership with FNB, Moneyweb presents this bespoke leadership video series with top business people. Leadership - Engage your Team - Create a Culture of Engagement

03:38
http://www.engage4results.com - Create a Culture of Engagement and learn how to find the Engagement Sweet Spot - Engagement is all about FEELINGS! As Carl Buechner said -- people will forget what you say; they'll forget what you do -- but they'll never forget how you made them feel. Engagement is the measure of the Team's Emotional Commitment to their leader and it's critically important for the bottom line. In America disengagement costs business over $350B a year and in Australia $45B! Gallup studies show only 30% of people are Actively Engaged despite all the attention on Engagement. Do you really know how engaged your people are? In the engagement surveys I conduct, the average business has about 50% Engaged AND Disengaged in total - This is a leaders first great opportunity! - The remaining 50% - sitting on the fence waiting for a leader to engage them...I call this, the leaders "Sweet Spot". An Actively Engaged team member is around 30% more productive than a fence sitter and retention is dramatically improved -- so it's essential that leaders work this sweet spot. A leader's second opportunity is the disengaged people -- or "Bad Apples" -- target them as well - help them adjust their attitudes, or help them find another job! Great leaders have Emotional Intelligence - but to really drive results and be exceptional - leaders need what I call EQ2 - Engagement Intelligence. EQ2 involves really understanding your people, finding their individual motivators and working on these "Hot Buttons" to improve morale, attitude and results. In my book "The People Pill" and in my engagement presentations we cover many strategies a leader can implement immediately - they cost virtually nothing and are guaranteed to make people feel great about themselves - which is the real secret to getting the best out of people and engaging them. Some of these strategies include.... - Five Minute Desk Chats......these are a way to show people you care about them ..."Mary, what's on for the weekend" - Sending out Personalised Handwritten Cards that recognize specific contributions, are timely & from the Heart - Morning Teas to Celebrate Progress & Success Stories - Holding a Breakfast of Champions to acknowledge effort - Pretend people have a banner on their forehead "Make Me Feel Special" Remember, people usually leave leaders not organizations and it's the line leader's responsibility for attitude and engagement! I recommend you measure your team engagement, and implement strategies like the ones above - focus on that sweet spot to bring everyone along and create a Culture of Engagement. It really will change your bottom line and retain - and attract - the best people! If you think of the best boss you ever had -- it'll be someone who helped you believe in yourself, cared about you, and developed and inspired you -- in other words -- they engaged you. Become a master of EQ2 and be the best boss YOUR team ever had! Ken is the founder of The Wright Coach and Engage4Results Pty Ltd, a business consulting and leadership development firm.
